JFK 3 hour layover enough in winter?

JFK 3 hour layover enough in winter?
My 19 year old daughter is traveling on her own for the first time and flying from RDU to JFK where she will connect to a flight to MAD. Her flight is due to arrive in JFK at 4:00 pm on a Tuesday in January. The flight to Madrid leaves at 7:00 pm. Is three hours a long enough layover during the winter? She is traveling on the same airline so luggage should be checked through. Only other alternative is a 7 hour layover. Thanks from a nervous mother.

Really, there's no way any one can give you any guarantees since everything depends on whether or not her flight from RDU arrives on time. Assuming that's the case, three hours should be OK but if there happens to a major winter storm that day (that's impossible to predict) all bets are off.
Your daughter should be able to use the airline's websites to check-in and get her boarding passes for both flights by going "online" up to 24 hours prior to departure. She should also be able to have her bags checked through to her final destination when she checks in at RDU.
This will enable her to deplane on arriving in JFK and make her way directly to the departure gate for the flight to MAD. On a normal day she should be able to that in under an hour giving her a two hour cushion.
Assuming her RDU/JFK flight arrives at a different terminal that the JFK/MAD flight she can take the Sky Tram between terminals - takes anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes depending on which terminals. She'll have to clear the TSA checkpoint to get to her departure gate but hose lines, while long, general move a a good pace.
So to sum it up, she'll need 10 to 15 minutes to deplane and walk to the Sky Tram, no more than 15 minutes to reach the departure terminal, and anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to get through the TSA checkpoint - total elapsed time just under an hour.

If your daughter's connection is on AA, she is looking at the ability to get between gates in no more than 15 minutes. Delta may take a bit longer because I am not certain about the terminal renovation and the ability to move from domestic to international. On any airline, she can get both boarding passes when she checks in, either on-line or at the terminal.
