Why are there pigs in Egypt?
I know this is a strange question but please bear with me.
I was reading in the news that all pigs in Egypt are to be slaughtered due to the swine flu problem. I am aware the vast majority of Egyptians are Muslim and Muslims don't eat pork. So why in the heck would anyone raise pigs in a country where so few people eat pork?

P_M, I found it! (and every day we learn something new, thanks to Fodor's alone )

Egypt's overwhelmingly Muslim population does not eat pork due to religious restrictions. But the animals are raised and consumed by the Christian minority, which some estimates put at 10 percent of the population.
Health Ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman estimated there were between 300,000-350,000 pigs in Egypt.
Pigs can be found in many places around Muslim world, often raised by religious minorities who can eat pork. But they are banned entirely in some Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Libya.

NOW WHO is not calling it "swine flu" after they've killed pigs in Egypt
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl...i092008D50.DTL
"The World Health Organization announced Thursday it will would stop using the term "swine flu" to avoid confusion over the danger posed by pigs. The policy shift came a day after Egypt began slaughtering thousands of pigs in a misguided effort to prevent swine flu."

DS#1 got this as a text message....and shared it with the rest of us!
