LED Screen On My Canon 20d is out...now what???

One of my Canon 20d's is in critical condition...the LED display is no longer showing. Is this really bad or an easy fix?

I am very much craving the Canon 1d MarkII but I really don't know if I should spend the $5,000 on it just yet. The 16.2MP is very attractive but the full sized sensor with nothing gained on the zoom is not so attractive. It would be great for my boxing photography but I don't know how great it would be for my wildlife photography when I am often relying on a long zoom.

Hi Rocco,
Do you mean the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II. The Ds is the 16 Meg camera. It is full frame so you would not have the nice crop factor. Also, it is not as fast as your 20D for multiple exposures. What about the EOS 1D Mark IIN. It is a 1.3 crop sensor and fires up to 8 frames a second. It is used primarily by photo journalists covering sports and many wildlife photographers as well. The autofocus on the Mark IIN is supposed to be the most accurate and fastest of the Series 1 Canon cameras. It is however an 8 Megapix camera, if that is an issue for you. This is the one I have decided to get, before our next safari. Rumors are that Canon will be introducing at least one new Series 1 camera in September. Perhaps if you can wait, you can get something even more suited to your needs. If you do go the Mark IIN route, you will give up about 120mm on your 400mm lens. With the 1Ds (note the "s&quot you will give up about 240mm. If you did that, you might have to buy that really expensive 500mm lens. Is your wife understanding?
Cheers, CJ

Kiboko,

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will wait until September.

Here is what I am looking for:

12+ MegaPixels
5+ Frames Per Second (8 fps would be great)
1.3x Minimum Zoom (although 1.6x would be great)
Improved Autofocus Capabilities
Larger LED Screen

I will have to start lurking over at www.fredmiranda.com to see what is coming. With 15 nights in Botswana and 3 nights at Sabi Sabi coming up in November, I need to be armed and dangerous! Plus, I will be spending 3 nights in Sydney, likely at a hotel that offers incredible views of the Sydney Harbor, so it would be nice to have some nice photos from there, as well.

Rocco, my wife, who has joined the pro ranks, has the 1D Mark 2 (8 fps) for pro basketball and other sports action and used it with the 100-400 IS on our last trip to Botswana. She is thrilled with its speed and responsiveness. Her back-up camera is the 5D, but that's primarily her 'people' camera because it's slower, doesn't have the sensor crop factor and renders flesh tones better than the 1D. I guess I'm her #2 back-up with my old film gear )))

Yeah for film gear: my old and battered Nikon FM2n just keeps on going through rain or shine, mountains and safaris... the same with my EOS 1n hs. Rocco, what does the guarantee say? I seem to recall it wasn't that long ago you bought it? If it works out to cost prohibitive to do anything about either send it to me so I can finally have a play with something digital or ebay it and get some dollars back for your upgrade.

Could it be possible that you've simply managed to switch of the after-shot preview facility? (Though not sure how you'd do that without realising!) Look at the Review Time option in the Menu and see if you've managed to turn it to OFF.

But if this is the case, your LCD (not LED) should still work when you press the PLAY button to see the images you've already taken.

If it doesn't it's obviously something more serious and I'd use the warranty to have it fixed.
