Israel, Amman, Petra

We would like to travel from Israel to Amman, Jordan and then to Petra. What mode of transp. would you suggest to Amman and then to Petra? There seem to be no hotel reservations available in Petra, so is it possible to do Amman-Petra-Amman in one day? Any sugggestions for small hotels or B&B which may not be booked?

Hi Phyllis,
We (50'ish couple) are leaving for a month in Egypt, Israel & Jordan early Oct. Through this forum we were given the name of a great company in Jordan from a wonderful American who lives in the Middle East. She has used these folks and sent friends to them as well. I had booked our hotels and planned the itinerary myself so will only be using them to provide a car and driver for 8 days - amazingly cheap compared to what a rental car was going to cost - not to mention the frustration of reading road signs in Arabic! If you like though they will plan the entire trip for you hotels and all (and the prices they quoted for that were excellent also). Incredibly professional to deal with.
There are dozens of hotels in Petra to choose from and to see it in one day is to miss a great deal - it's enormous. How active are you? Do you like to hike? How long do you have to spend in Jordan? What kind of price range are you looking for in a hotel?
Please feel free to email me directly and I will pass on lots of info to you. I have been researching for 6 months now and the more I find out about Jordan the more excited I am to see it.

We really enjoyed hearing from you. We are very active retirees in our 50's as well. There will be 4 of us going for one month. We are only 1 week into planning this trip for May. We'd love that info about Jordan and any other info you can offer. How much time are you going to spend in Israel? Egypt? We thought we'd go to Amman and Jordan for 4 days. The reason we were going to Petra for the day is because we thought it would be next to impossible to get a room. But if you give us that tour guide's info and some more tidbits about your hotels, perhaps we will be able to stay longer. What are you doing for guides and transp. in Israel and Egypt? Are you taking a Nile cruise? We haven't decided yet. Pros and cons?

Hi-
Thought that I would throw my two cents worth in.

I am just firming up my plans to go to Jordan for four days and five nights and will be taking a tour for two weeks in Egypt -- and a couple of days on my own -- in November.

Since I could not get a tour that goes to all of the places that I want to see, I have decided to hire a driver to drive me to the different areas. With four people it really should not cost that much.

The reason for your not being able to get a room in Petra, and possibly in Amman, is because the agencies put a hold on blocks of rooms and one month before, if they do not need the rooms, they surrender them. If you do use an agency, and there are no rooms available, ask to be put on a waiting list. In all probability you will be able to get a room.

Hope you enjoy the trip. I really can't wait to go.

Happy traveling.

ellie

Phyllis,
Have you checked on the Taybet Zaman hotel in Petra. It is wonderful, far superior to any of the others in the area.
