How much video did you shoot?

I know that everyone's answer to this question will be different but I need a general ideal.

We will be on safari for 9 days and then 2 days in VF and 4 in Cape Town. I assume most of the footage will be shot in Botswana. For these number of days can you give me some idea of hours shot? I will be editing when we get home but do not intend to edit while there. My DH says we will only shoot about 3-4 hours of video and I disagree. The problem is that he is doing the video and I am doing the stills.
Thanks as always to this wonderful community.

We are 5 weeks out from leaving and so excited.

My husband shot about 9-11 hours of video if I recall correctly on a two-week safari in 2004. I brought back about 5,000 stills

Have a terrific time. We hope to go back some day soon.

I went on a 10 day mobile tent safari in Botswana and I took 6 hours of film. I would have probably done more if I wasn't taking still photos too. Some of my favorite footage is the guide telling stories, mini lectures on zoology, botany, geology, etc. I used it as a tape recorder to capture the magical sounds too. Just point the camera at something like the campfire, a lantern, etc and absorb the sounds of Afreeekah!

spiegelcjs -- When and where are you going in Botswana? I leave in about 5 weeks, too, arriving in Botswana on May 28 (Jacks, Kwetsani, Chitabe, Duma Tau), and then VF on June 7 and 8 (River Club). It would be fun to meet some of the fodor's folk whose musings, questions, and advice I've been reading for months.

I spent over 3 weeks in Kenya, Tanzania & Rwanda. I shot 12 hours of video and could have shot considerably more.

But I edited it all down to a nice 2 hours 20 minute film.

bevor: I think we will just miss you. We leave from LA on May 28, 5 nights in Cape Town, 3 nights at Mala Mala, then on to JB for one night, and then Kwetsani, Chitabe, Duma Tau and then River Club. We leave from JB on June 17. Please leave us messages at all the lodges especially if there is a special
guide or something. Let's talk for sure when we all get back. Where do you live?

How are you? I remember when we were at the LA get together you had done a video. Am I correct that the camera you used record on DVD-RW media? If it does did you have any trouble transfering the vidoes to the computer and then editing into a program. I have a Sony DCR-DVD205 which uses the media, and have been unable to successfully transfer etc. I have used Pinnacle Studios program before and liked it. Also am I correct they only use 30 miniute recording and was this a problem having to contstantly change the media?

Nope, my camera uses MiniDV tapes.
I think there was a thread here earlier on the benefits of using tape vs. recording to a DVD.

Long story short I would strongly advise tapes.
