I'm planning a trip to Uganda and Tanzania in June/July, and am trying to figure out how to get from Kampala, Uganda to Mwanza, Tanzania. There used to be a ferry which ran between the two cities on Lake Victoria, but I understand it's no longer running. Is there a bus that travels that route? If so,how long does it take? Daily buses?
Thanks for any information you can give.

I read your response to my inquiry, as well as your response to another person who wrote in about Africa. I am wondering why you have the need to write critical or sarcastic responses to people. If you do not have any helpful information to pass on, why bother to answer at all? Is there something you are trying to prove?

Well, OP, I thought pointing you to the LP was helpful! As that's where up to date info of that kind can be found - assuming there is a recent post on the subject. And I do wish you luck - sounds like a great journey.

If there is someone who visits this board who has advice for you - I hope they give it. But so far my initial reaction has been proved right.

None of your responders have offered information, have they? Just all having a good ole swipe at me (and being much nastier that the post which I believe has led to the cartel getting on its high horse). At least my bad tempered response was about facts - but theirs is personal. Must have touched a sore spot.

I do owe you an apology for perhaps overreacting. I was not aware of the Lonely Planet site, and have since posted a message on it and received a very helpful reply. Thank you for leading me in a direction I wouldn't have known to go.

No apology necessary...Alice 13 most likely learned of Lonely Planet's Thorntree forum from other helpful Fodorites, yet has been nothing but nasty since her appearance on this board. Her intention with her "helpful" response was less to help you than to take a shot at Fodorites.

Shelby - glad you got some help there - they are a funny lot on the LP board but their info is usually currenr.

Roccco - another personal snipe! but still love you lots!! However the idea that I "found the LP" from this board is about as nonsensical as you can get.

Let's start by asking if you know why the LP's site is called the "Thorn Tree" and take it from there.

You are not the only person who "loves" Africa. But it seems you rule this board. I don't really want to fight. It is a public board - and on the rare occasions when I have something to offer, I offer it.

I could have said to shelby that it was not a problem to travel in Uganda - there are always minibuses plying for trade. A journey I made from the Sese Islands to Fort Portal took three changes of road transport - and the boat made four.

I have also travelled the road from Bujumbura to Mwanza. Bur I have not travelled EXACTLY the same route as Shelby wants to do. So rather than fire out half-baked and out of date ideaa I recommended the LP.

Why not?

There buses from Kla to TZ but not to Mwanza particularly. You will have to go thru Nairobi-Arusha and connect to Mwanza. It may cost you arond USD50 up to Mwanza. You can email me and give further info. I am in [email protected]
