Self Drive SA, Botswana, Zimbabwe - help, 4x4 hire/border restrictions

Family of 5 heading out to Johannesburg arriving 26.7.14 want to hire a 4x4 and self drive from SA into Botswana, then into Zimbabwe, then back to Johannesburg to depart 25.8.14 (31 days). All attempts to find a car hire company that would allow both border crossings have so far failed...we need to be more creative...has anyone got and suggestions about how/where to travel...happy to consider taxis/hire/flights/bus etc.
Many thanks in advance for your help in turning this adventure into a reality!

"All attempts to find a car hire company that would allow both border crossings have so far failed" - I'm surprised to hear that there are some firms that do this, have you tried Aroundabout Cars ?

You may also wish to try www.carhireandholidays.com email [email protected] They do Southern Africa cross border 4x4 vehicle hire. July/August tends to be a very busy season for self drive 4x4 in Southern Africa, but might be well worth giving them a try, especially if you require an un-equipped 4x4.

Self Drive touring in 4x4s have grown to be extremely popular in the last 4-5 years. It looks like you waited too long to try to make reservations. For touring in a couple countries in high season, and booking campsites at several parks, you need to start as early as a year in advance. Botswana and Zimbabwe are two of those countries I refer to.

Thank you all for your responses. I'm delighted to say that we've had success with aroundaboutcars...they usually only allow travel to Victoria Falls from Botswana but they've kindly granted us permission to go further into Zimbabwe...
