Thanks, I viewed all the albums, and the photos are incredible -- in addition to all the excellent and varied animal photos, I really liked the landscapes and skyscapes, many of which are really beautiful and colorful.

Thank you for sharing the wonderful photos. I really can't add anything to what has already been said--the impala birth, amazing.

The giraffe at sunrise is beautiful.

I hope whatever sadness you are experiencing will pass with time.

I went right for the Gazelle birth album. What an amazing find and you caught it all on film from birth to first steps to nursing. Wonder what the little guy is doing now?

Mahale chimps were great. I especially liked #13. How many chimp walks did you go on?

You captured the Nakuru flamingos in their glory, as well as the other species.

Will check out your other albums later.

You guys! I just love this board ¡V so many kind words, you make me teary-eyed.

Dennis-The sunrise giraffe is really one of my favorites too ¡V I had it enlarged to 20x30, and it came out quite nice. And thank you for your kindness ¡V I WILL get to it ¡V maybe even this week, as DH is away¡K

Sandi- I actually thought quite a lot about you when we were in Africa¡Kkind of my inspiration to ¡§keep my chin up¡¨. I guess you can tell I¡¦m a ¡§cat¡¨ person ƒº

Sherry ¡Vthought about you too when we were there. The birth of the Tommie was amazing ¡V it was the first non-human birth I¡¦ve seen (well, I guess that would make it the second-ever birth I¡¦ve ever seen! ƒº )

Leely ¡V You¡¦re right - we did get some stories to tell! And I¡¦m thinking you know a lot more about the animals than I, and so ¡V correct away!!! ƒº

Cindy- YES! Babies, and more babies, and more babies! I think that the only mammal that we didn¡¦t see a young of (sorry for the grammar) was a hyena.

Barbara- I was really happy with the camera ¡V and all failures were user, not technology. Although I will tell you ¡V we met a woman at (in?) Loisaba with the FZ30, she took 8 pictures (8!!!) and it died on her. We tried switching batteries, memory cards, power plugs ¡V it was just dead! Luckily, she had brought a backup camera (I did not), but it was only 4mp and had no real zoom. As luck would have it though (mind you she was from the states), her travel agent was going to be in Nairobi within a couple of days, and had the same camera, and was going to let her use it!!

Africnow - thanks for your kind words. Re: the link ¡V I think if you¡¦re not on dial-up, it works, but if you¡¦re on a dial-up (as I am at home) it tends to get hung up. Re: the birth: From the time we saw mom start birthing until the baby suckled was between 20 and 30 minutes. Unbelievable!! It was such a thrill to see it. Re: Serengeti camp ¡V it was a private Royal African Safari camp. We landed at the Seronera airstrip, and went from there. We were there in February.

Patty- yes, we camped at the Solio Ranch. Royal African managed to obtain permission to camp ¡V and it was spectacular. We were originally supposed to stay in the Aberdare mountains, but that became a day-trip instead (where we saw the giant forest hogs ƒº), and we stayed on the ranch¡¦s lands ¡V and - We saw RHINO!!!!!! Re: Rusinga Island ¡V one of our favorites ¡Vthe lodge was delightful, ¡§playing archeologist¡¨ was so much fun, the rooms/bath were wonderful, staff was outstanding¡KGO GO GO GO!

Lisa- I¡¦m glad you liked the pictures ¡V I did literally take 2600+ - even after ditching the blurred, oops-that-cape-buffalo-moved-just-as-I-snapped shots ¡V so, just by shear luck I should have gotten a couple of good¡¦uns! And yes ¡V the birth was so special. I don¡¦t know how Jan (our guide) managed to arrange that for us. (Yes, I¡¦m kidding ƒº)

Wayne-the leopards at Lake Nakuru were beautiful ¡V the big female was georgeous ¡V and the little mama was so sweet. We were really lucky to see her and her cubs ¡V and to hear them cry was a joy. Re: the birth - I really like the one where Mama and Baby strike an identical pose¡Kso sweet.

OnlyMeOirish: Don¡¦t you just HATE dial-up??? I have a hi-speed connection at work, but at home¡Kzzzzzzzzz. Reake Nakuru: it was a Royal African camp at a sight called Soy Samba campsite ¡V lovely. If you like/want to see flamingos, that¡¦s the place to do it ¡V although some had died before/while we were there due to drought. I think it¡¦s better now. We did enjoy Lake Nakuru ¡V but it was the place where we saw the most other tourists (other than Ngorongoro), as it¡¦s very close to a populous area. I don¡¦t know if I would give up time in the Mara, because - as I¡¦m sure you know ¡V moving around a lot can be very tiring. How long will you be at your other stops? We would spend 3/4 nights at a campsite, and then 2 nights at a lodge, and it was exhausting. Why riding around all day in a vehicle makes one tired, I don¡¦t know, but¡KRe: elephant eye/camera: I am a complete novice as well ¡V the camera did all the work! Just focused in and clicked! I did get some great advice from some people on this board ¡V be sure to practice a lot before you go! Re: Ele-orphanage: yes, we were there after ¡§normal¡¨ viewing hours ¡V I think it was around 4:00 or so in the afternoon. We had to pay an extra price, but it was so worthwhile ¡V the feeling of one of the babies sucking on my finger was like nothing I have experienced. We are now life-long supporters!

Dick- I was amazed by the owls ¡V somehow that was not an animal I associated with Africa!

Nyamera: You missed the baby warthogs (ƒº) I did laugh at your comment about the ¡§baby¡¨ topi ¡V silly creature had to get down on it¡¦s knees to suckle it was so big! Ruma was very worthwhile, just to see the Roan antelope ¡V but also because of the ride to/from the park. We happened to be there on market day, and to see the people streaming into town - for literally miles - was a sight to behold. The park is small ¡V but also not used by many, so it was special.

Jagirl ¡V thank you. Makes me kind of wish I was going too¡K

Michael: The surrounds were very different from what I¡¦m accustomed to in VT ¡V great, wide open plains, harsh and dry, and yet teeming with life. And I really like clouds, what can I say. ƒº

Gaurang: thank you for your kind comments, and for taking time to look!

Johan: Coming from you, high praise indeed! Thank you!

CW: Every time I look at that photo of the giraffe, I remember exactly how I felt when I took it ¡V and it was wonderful.

Kevin- thank you for looking!!

Atravelynn: I think about the little Tommie a lot too ¡V hope s/he¡¦s ok, and not lion food (or play). Re: Mahale ¡Vwe were not lucky with the weather there ¡V it really poured ¡V sowe only went out once ¡V but¡Kit was a wonderful experience to see/and especially to HEAR/ the chimps.

And sorry for the odd characters - I copied it in from a word doc, and no matter how I tried, I couldn't make them go away.

cyn,
Don't worry about those characters. I saw them and thought, "Oh, that cynstalker, speaking in code again."

Wanted to let you know that I referred my Africa buddy (we leave Thursdayyyy) to your photo albums. Not only does she think they're marvelous, but she also looked long and hard at the "toilet" photo from your mobile(?) camp. That gave her a lot to think about.

Again, I'm sorry that something has happened to make you sad. I hope it lifts your spirits even a little bit to know that your photos have given many people on this board a great deal of pleasure.

Cyn,
Our ORIGINAL itinerary is as follows:
July 20th LHR - NBO (overnight flight arriving July 21st)
July 21st NBO - Kigali Rwanda (arr. 10.05am)
July 22nd Gorilla Treck PNV
July 23rd Kigali ????
July 24th Kigali - NBO (dep. 6.45am - arr. 9am). 1/2 day around Nairobi with Kennedy
July 24th Wilson (dep. 3pm)- Masai Mara Serena
July 25th Masai Mara Serena
July 26th Masai Mara Serena
July 27th Masai Mara Serena
July 28th Masai Mara - Wilson (arr. 12.15pm. Being picked up by Kennedy - Overnight Nairobi Serena Hotel
July 29th Nairobi Serena Hotel - Booked Kennedy for private tour.
July 30th NBO - LHR (dep. 9.35am)

Now we are thinking:
July 21st Gorillas Nest Rwanda
July 22nd Gorilla treck o/n Kigali
July 23rd Fly back to Nairobi then either go to Nakuru or down to the Mara (we're waitlisted for this date) - our oiriginal booking is July 24th - 28th at Mara Serena BUT this is where we are thinking of cuting a day (ie do Mara Serena July 23rd to July 26th then Nakuru area July 27th to July 29th stopping in Nairobi in between.
OR if we don't get the Serena for the 23rd we could do Nakuru July 23rd and cut July 24th from our Mara portion.
We COULD actually fit both Nakuru AND the Mara in 6 nights BUT we really want to spend some time in Nairobi. What do you think? (I have another thread on this)
I e-mailed the Elephant Orphanage regrding visiting hours for 'foster parents'(we have two foster babies). I just got a reply back saying that we could make an appointment for 5.15 when the elephants are being brought back into the stockades. Can I ask how you arranged the 4pm feeding visit? How much did you have to pay? I really wouldn't mind paying to do this.

Thanks again Cyn,
Imelda

Leely- Code-speak. LOL! yeah, I kind of wondered about posting the "toilet", but then I thought, why not? I was amused by the process (I felt like a cat ), and thought it might eliminate a surprise for someone else. YOU LEAVE THURSDAY!!! I tried to find your itinerary - what's it called? I hope you have a wonderful, safe, joyful trip!!!!

Imelda: Whatever you decide (or the fates arrange, re: Lake Nakuru) will be great. It is a small park, so 2 nights would be plenty to see most - especially if you have the luck of the Irish. Re: ele visit - it may have been around 5 when we were there, although they did head back out into the Nairobi park after our visit, so I'm still thinking it was earlier. We didn't get to see bottle feeding - they were just munching on the shrubbery. It was something that Royal African Safaris was able to arrange for us. The extra cost was $250 per person - and we gladly paid it to support their work. I did read your post with your itinerary - you are going to have such a great trip!

OnlyMeOirish:

Your itinerary is sounding pretty good.

Seeing the Elephant Orphange in Nairobi is worth it. Also there is a a giraffe sanctuary that is worth seeing. Not to mention just seeing the city itself. The Orphange was part of my tour so I don't know how much the tickets were.

Cyn, your itinerary listed a private luxury mobile camp in Tanzania - can you tell me which one as we are trying to decide now? Thx.

I just looked at your pictures for the third time! They are truly beautiful. I'm going to Tanzania in February, 2007 and looking at your pictures just adds to my already overwhelming excitement.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks pbrydie! I went back and deleted out some of the Rhinos at Solio - I went overboard on them, don't know why.

You'll love Tanzania! And what a nice treat to be doing it with your daughter!
