I plan on being in Rwanda next September for a week. Here is my itinerary. It feels like a lot to pack in. And a lot of driving. What would you definitely keep or adjust or any general recommendations as to how to optimize this.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City Tour & Transfer to Nyungwe Forest
Arrive at Kigali International Airport where you’ll be met by our guide. Enjoy a brief Kigali City Tour including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, and a local craft center.
Lunch in Kigali, then drive south through the lush hills of Rwanda to Nyungwe Forest National Park (approx. 5–6 hours). En route, stop at the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza and Ethnographic Museum in Huye.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking – Nyungwe Forest
Early breakfast, then transfer to the Uwinka or Cyamudongo trailhead for your chimpanzee tracking experience. Trek through lush rainforest, spotting other primates such as colobus monkeys and mangabeys, plus rich birdlife. After tracking, do a Canopy Walkway, offering breathtaking views of the forest.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, drive north via the scenic Lake Kivu route, stopping in Kibuye or Gisenyi for a lakeside lunch. Continue along the Congo–Nile Trail to Musanze (Volcanoes National Park) – a picturesque journey through rolling hills and rural landscapes. Arrive in the evening and check in at your hotel.

Day 4: Golden Monkey Tracking – Volcanoes National Park
After an early breakfast, head to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing before your golden monkey trek. Spend about an hour observing these playful, endangered primates in their natural bamboo forest habitat. Afternoon options: Visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for an authentic cultural experience. Or relax at your lodge enjoying the volcano views.

Day 5: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Uganda)
After breakfast, cross into Uganda via the Cyanika. Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, home to nearly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Enjoy scenic views of terraced hills and local villages.
Overnight: Ichumbi Lodge
Day 6: Gorilla Trekking – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Early breakfast, then transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing before your gorilla trekking adventure. Hike through dense forest to find one of Bwindi’s habituated gorilla families – an unforgettable wildlife encounter. After spending an hour with the gorillas, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.
Overnight: Ichumbi Lodge
Day 7: Return to Kigali – Departure
After breakfast, drive back to Kigali , Stop for photo opportunities along the way and enjoy the scenic countryside.
