Algeria - driving
Hello,
Has anyone driven recently in Algeria? We have a small camper van and would be arriving by ferry from Spain or France. Is it possible to drive without an escort? We have seen references to this but they may be out of date.
Thank you.

I never heart about an escort. But there are tons of other things to take into consideration https://qcalgerie.com//voyage-algerie-formalites
I would ask the Algerian embassy responsible for your country

Yes—self-driving the north is fine without an escort. Convoys/guides are usually required only in Saharan wilayas (Djanet, Tamanrasset/Illizi) and for national parks; the coast and big cities are independent-friendly. On the ferry, have the registration in your name (or a notarized authorization). You’ll receive a temporary import form—keep it for exit. Most EU policies exclude Algeria; buy frontier insurance at the port. Expect frequent police checkpoints; show passports and car papers. Roads are good but fast; avoid night driving and speed traps. Carry cash for fuel and tolls. Signs are in French/Arabic; download offline maps. For the south, arrange permits with a local agency.
