What do you think...skip Wadi Rum for an extra day at Petra?

The way the flight schedule works out if we want to spend three full days at Petra we'll have to give up one day somewhere else. I don't want to give up Jerash or the Dead Sea so we're wondering if we should skip Wadi Rum. All that is planned at Wadi Rum is a Jeep tour and overnight at a camp.

Is two full days at Petra enough or should we take 3 days? Is Wadi Rum not to be missed?

You can see a great deal in Petra in two days - click on my name for my TR including two days at Petra. I wasn't that impressed with Wadi Rum, but I think that was the fault of the tour I was on. You need to see the rock formations in morning or evening light with a guide who takes you to the most interesting places. Actually, you should be able to manage an extra half day at Petra, and then a late afternoon and overnight at Wadi Rum.

loru100,

Yes, though we had a full day at Petra, from about 9:15 am to 4:30 pm, it just wasn't nearly enough.

I'd give up what we saw in Wadi Rum for a 2nd day in Petra now.

I would spend the extra day at Wadi Rum. We spent 2 full days in Petra and saw a lot. We got there early and explored the entire day. For Wadi Rum we spent one entire afternoon on a camel trek into the desert which was a highlight of the trip. We stopped for tea, ran on the dunes and then rode back to camp. The following day we got up early to catch the sunrise over the rock formations and then did a full day jeep tour where our guide took us to all kinds of locations (springs, rock carvings, etc...) which was wonderful. The experience of camping with the Bedouins was spectacular and I wish we'd had more time there.

The suggestion to split the extra day is good too. You could get to Wadi Rum in time for the sunset and the camping under the stars.

I would spend an extra day at Wadi Rum. In fact, I could easily spend a whole week at Wadi Rum, found it much more impressive than Petra to be honest. But then, I'm a desert rat. The desert at dusk and at night is just magical.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions...I'm kind of interested to see what Wadi Rum is all about after your experiences!
