Has anyone travelled to Maui during this time? Is there a high probability of significant rainfall, or lack of sun? We plan to only be there for a week, and would hate for most of the trip to be "ruined" by rain and gray weather! We are trying to escape the cold Arctic winter that we get here in Canada.

We are planning to stay at the Maui Westin Resort & Spa on Ka'anapali and don't know whether that area gets significant rainfall during those months. Our first trip to Maui/Hawaii was 5 years ago for our honeymoon and it was in June so we had perfect weather then.

If it's raining where you are, and you want to beach it, go to the southwest side, where it won't be raining.
Otherwise, enjoy the tropical rain; wherever you are, it won't be cold.

Does the tropical rain last very long (ie. several hours)? Since it's our second trip there we plan to do mostly rest and relaxation by the pool and on the beach and I'm worried that the rain will put a damper on things!

It does rain occasionally, but usually for only brief periods. We've never had it rain more than 5-10 minutes at a time. You're odds are good! When it does rain, it is really warm. I've never felt the urge to make a run for it. We're usually swimming or laying by the pool anyway, so it has never stopped us from doing anything. As the prior poster said, if it looks like rain is going to stay for awhile, head towards Wailea.

Don't give this a second thought. You'll have a great time. We usually go in March and April, too.

issy - How often has it been gray/rainy when you have been in Maui during March/early April in the past?
Do you still manage to "tan" or is it just you are able to enjoy the warm weather with limited sun?

We are still trying to decide whether we should attempt to go to Maui during early April (instead of March) to ensure better weather, but I know there are no guarantees. Right now there is a seat sale but we need to buy the tix before Jan. 11th.

It's been a number of years since we have stayed in Kaanapali/Lahaina. We typically stay in Wailea. We've been there 5 times in the last 6-7 years. Last year we were there the second week of April, two years before that we were there in mid-March. I do not recall any rain last year, and the time we went in mid-March I remember one afternoon of a very brief/light rain (less than 5 min). Nobody bothered to leave the pool area. That is pretty typical. If it does cloud up at all, it's usually in the afternoon. But I wouldn't call it gray. It's beautiful.

I don't think you need to worry about the weather. It's still very warm, and you will still tan (or burn if you're not careful). It's a great time to go. Just stay to the drier sides of the island, which sounds like you are planning on doing anyway.

Have fun. I'm envious. We were planning on going in April, but have had to cancel for a couple of reasons. Next year!
