What type of home can you get in your city for around $500,000?
Trying to get an idea of housing cost in your community. What type of home will $500,000 buy? Not just the type of house but the location/desirable/safety etc??
Speaking for myself...$500,000 will buy a home in a nice Orange County, CA suburb, approximately 1900-2000 sq.ft, within 1/2 hour to the Pacific Ocean, in a clean safe area.

Interesting topic...but you forgot to mention what city...??
In my city (Torrance, CA) you probably could get a decent, but nothing fancy, home, 3 bedroom, 1500 sq.ft. home in an OK neighborhood. You wouldn't be near the water though...the closer to the ocean the prices really soar!

In Portland OR, $500,000 will buy you up to a 5000 sf ranch style house on a 1/2 acre lot with a large pool and hot tub, 8 minutes from downtown in a great, established neighborhood. The house near us sold for that this year. It had a remodeled kitchen, but needed other minor remodeling.

In the DFW area 500,000 will buy one hell of a house in an exclusive area.
I just bought a great new house in a new planned community with a golf course, pools and miles of walking trails. The house is brick and had all the bells and whistles, including lawn and beds, sprinkler system, alarm system, appliances, ceramic tile flooring, oversize tubs, walk in showers, etc... My house, at 1800 SF, was the smallest floor plan in the development. It is located in a newly developed area with virtually no crime.
I paid 138,000

Our home appraised last week for 600K. Nothing extraordinary-about 2600 square feet, four bedrooms, three baths, all newly renovated last year. We are in an established neighborhood (most homes built in 1942) about fifteen minutes from the DC line.

We also live in the DC area where homes are rediculously priced compared to the rest of the nation. Our home, bought in 2000, was going to sell last month for $450,000. It was bought for $300,000 two years ago. It was new and located on a cul-de-sac in a small community in Montgomery County on 1/3 acre lot. Average size home at about 4000 square feet of living space. We found some new homes in North Potomac selling for over 500K with comparable sq. footage! Outrageous! In Tampa, we bought a new 5100 square foot house on a 1/3 acre lot in a gated golf course community for less than 450K and the taxes were a lot less.

A neighbor in Dupont Circle (Washington DC) recently sold his 3-story historic rowhouse for exactly $500K. 3BR, 1.5 baths, no air conditioning, broken-down saggy back porch, small overgrown yard with no landscaping, needs new roof, outdated kitchen. Nice hardwood floors and period details like crown molding, but a real fixer-upper -- would need a ton of work done. Great location and lots of potential though.

In Rochester NY you would get an incredible pre-existing house or a very deluxe brand-new home with lots of square footage, even on a nice lot, in any of the best surburan neighborhoods. I would expect that the house would include all the "bells and whistles, i.e., hardwood floors, granite countertops, built-ins, with great landscaping and deluxe features on the exterior as well. For that kind of money you will have your pick of the "cream of the crop" here or can build just about whatever you want.

In Minneapolis, you could go to ways: You could either get a very nice, stately 2500 s.f. house in a very established upscale area with great schools and no crime.
The second option would be to buy a brand new 4000 sq ft home in an upscale subdivision. You'd be further from the city center, but would still have great schools and good neighbors.

People who move here having sold homes in other locations are very pleasantly surprised.
