boat trip from thailand to laos
I am traveling to Thailand mid Febuary thru mid March. My husband and I are thing of taking side trip to Laos for about 8-10 days. My husband would like to take two day slow boat trip up Mekong river to enter Laos.
How hard on the body is this trip. I am in pretty good shape but not peak shape for a fifty year old women.
What is the best way to make arrangements to do this trip?

If you are talking about the slow boat down to Luang Prabang, the slow boat can mean sitting on rice bags in the hot sun with lots of young(er) travelers, and you have an over night in so-so places. It is quite hard on your bottom, even if you have "padding". Take lots of fluids. If you want something more comfortable and more expensive, look up the 1 day boat (I think it is the "Naga"
, which has decent seating, cool drinks and more space. The boat up from Luang Prabang is slower, but less crowded. There is lots of info on this boat trip over at the Thorn Tree forum at Lonelyplanet.com, as this is on the backpacker route.
If you just want a ride on a cool river, inquire at Luang Prabang about day trips up the nearby rivers, which can be spectacular.

I had just done this boat trip about 2 days ago, though I went from Laos to Thailand and instead of using the slow boat, used a slow tour boat.
We used Asian Oasis (Luang say), and went from Luang Prabang to Huay Xai. Just google them.
The boat trip was not taxing at all - we just sat around and there was one on shore excursion each day. It was two days and one night. The one night we spent at the company's lodge (little Bungalows overlooking the Mekong), which is half way. It was all very pleasant.

Hi, I did the trip by slow boat from Thailand to Laos a few years ago.
The first leg was fine, lots of space although not hugely comfortable. Some people brought cushions as the wooden benches are uncomfortable for 8 hours!
On the second day, two boat loads were put into one boat. It was very, very crowded and uncomfortable with no room to move or to stand.
The town where you stop is pretty basic, where we stayed only had electricity for a few hours. This was fine for us but it was "roughing it".
The scenery is amazing, very beautiful. I think it was worth it in spite of swollen legs!
