Things to do in Newport

May should be a nice time of year to be in Newport. There are a lot of blooming shrubs and bushes. (Hopefully mid-May isn't too early for blooms.) Obviously the biggest thing to do there is tour the mansions. I would recommend the Breakers as the one not to be missed. I would also suggest the Cliffwalk. It is a path that runs right along the ocean's edge behind some of the mansions. It is about 3.5 miles one way. There was an article in our Sunday paper (Philadelphia Inquirer 2/18) today re Newport. They also suggested bus tours and mentioned a dinner train (the name of which escapes me). Sorry I can't be of more help, it's been a while since I've been there. It is a beautiful town. Enjoy!

May is a great time to visit Newport. You may catch a day warm enough to visit the beach if you're lucky.Of course, you will die if you put your foot in the water!! The water doesn't warm up enough for adults til around June 30th or so.
Here are some ideas:
Ocean Drive - a fantastic 10 mile drive along the ocean. Great surf, rocks and scenery. Visit Fort Adams, Castle Hill Inn ( have lunch or supper here- this is the setting for Joanie's wedding in the show Providence) and Hammersmith Farm ( the old Auchincloss estate -childhood summer home of Jackie Kennedy).
Second Beach - stop to see Purgatory Chasm along the way and visit the wildlife sanctuary at the far end of the beach.( have clams at Flo's or a lobster dinner at Johnnys' on the way.
Bellevue Avenue - visit the great Newport Tennis Hall of Fame and see where the rich people play. Visit the great little shops in this area - my favorite is Runcible Spoon. Further down " The Avenue " visit Cliff Walk and the Forty Steps. There may still be seals lurking in the nearby surf. They come and stay the winter in Newport - very classy seals! Enjoy the walk behind the great mansions. Some of the Great Gatsby was filmed here. See a mansion or two if the spirit moves you. On the other side of Bellevue Ave visit the Newport Art museum and several nice antique shops.
Thames Street - visit the seedy and trendy shops all mixed together. The film Amistad was shot partially in this area. Drive out to Goat Island for cocktails or dinner. The view from the hotels bar ( I think its' on the 7th floor) is fabulous.Have lunch or dinner at the Black Pearl or the White Horse Tavern. There are several boats that give tours of the waterfront in this area.
There is Jai Alai with slot machines near the Newport Bridge.
Got a nice afternoon.... take your favorite book to the grassy area behind the Eisenhower House and spend the time reading and watching the boats go by. Visit the old historical cemetary right next to the cliffs.
Enjoy your stay!! Need more info - go to OSO.com
