Advice on rail tickets for trip to Spain, Southern France & Italy
Hi,
I am planning a trip to Spain, Southern France and Italy. The itinerary is seen below. I would like to find out from experienced travellers here if there is a need to get a eurail pass or should I just purchase the tickets online?
My trip is next month (mid Sept). Hence, I am wondering if the tickets will be expensive if I purchase online now? I believe the nearer the date of the rides, the more expensive the tickets? Appreciate any advice on this.
Day 1 Reach Amsterdam
Day 2 Amsterdam
Day 3 Amsterdam
Day 4 Amsterdam
Day 5 Flight to Madrid
Day 6 Madrid
Day 7 Madrid
Day 8 Madrid
Day 9 Madrid to Barcelona
Day 10 Barcelona
Day 11 Barcelona
Day 12 Barcelona train to Aix En Provence
Day 13 Aix En Provence
Day 14 Aix En Provence to Nice
Day 15 Nice
Day 16 Nice to Cinque Terra
Day 17 Cinque Terra
Day 18 Cinque Terra to Florence
Day 19 Florence
Day 20 Florence
Day 21 Florence to Venice
Day 22 Venice
Day 23 Venice flight home
Many thanks!
HC

HC,
Go to the Renfe (Spain), SNCF (France), and Trenitalia websites and start punching in your dates and times. Madrid to Barcelona is easy, SNCF will give you a price for Barcelona to Aix and Aix to Nice. Trenitalis will give you a price from Nice to Genoa, but the trains to the Cinque Terra are small local ones and may not be available online. Check the sights, do the math, and see what works out best.

Only you can do the maths comparison with whatever rail pass cost against purchase of point to point tickets purchased at present. You have the national rail sites. You can certainly still find a 70% discount off the normal fare on your Madrid to Barna journey surely beating any rail pass and the supplement, but that is if happy to be up very early in the day.
Perhaps you should read - http://www.seat61.com/Railpass-and-E...ide.htm#Should

If the Trenitalia website doesn't work, and it can be a pain to use, go to www.italiarail.com which is easier to use and just as effective.
Here is what ELSE you can do:
Since I assume none of these trips will be overnight when you get to AMSTERDAM go to the travel section at Amsterdam Central station...not the ticket windows...and buy ALL of your tickets there.
