British Open 2015 packages: too late for budget-friendly options?

British Open 2015 packages: too late for budget-friendly options?
That is, looking for a couple of days of tickets (not necessarily the final Saturday and Sunday dates) combined with a hotel (3 stars would be fine) and transportation (not planning on a car rental). We've never been to Scotland, and the searching I've done shows some of the non-luxury packages already in short supply. Does anyone have any tips about particular packages and providers worth exploring further? Thanks.

Agreed, forget packages.
Tickets do NOT go on sale till the end of this month at the earliest so you should be able to book tickets directly without a problem. NO package already has tickets.

Booking a hotel and taking public transport is not a problem at all. St. Andrews is quite small and you can easily walk from the bus or train to the course. So that just leaves where would you like your hotel to be, to decide.
In St. Andrews during the Open, will obviously be at a premium, you can decide whether you wan't to pay the premium or not. You will not have a problem finding and booking a room if you book now.
Staying a bit farther out can offer you more choice and either lower prices or more bang for your buck. Anywhere from Edinburgh and up the Fife coast to St. Andrews would make sense.

No sojouner(traveler?) . . . One cannot walk from the 'train station' since there is NO train station in St Andrews.
And anywhere in Fife one will pay a premium. This is one instance where staying in Edinburgh will likely be cheaper.

Regarding a premium, as I wrote the OP is free to decide how much they want to spend but I am quite sure that the farther they move away from St. Andrews itself, the more they will get for their money.
Whether Edinburgh will be cheaper in general or not is highly debateable I would say. It will be high season for tourism in Edinburgh which exists regardless of whether there is an Open being played in St. Andrews or not. What constitutes paying a premium in Fife because the Open is on vs. what you will pay in Edinburgh in July for something similar, who knows.
