Day trips from Sorrento

I'm flying Seville to Naples on a Friday morning and returning on Tuesday afternoon. I am considering changing the returning flight to Wednesday afternoon/evening. Right now I am staying every night in Piano di Sorrento with my boyfriend and his family. Since the weekend in question is the first weekend of Holy Week, we will not be attempting to visit Rome, Venice, or Milan, instead saving these trips for another time! Besides Pompeii which we are already planning to see, what else would you suggest for us? We love the beach and we love museums. Thank you in advance!

From Sorrento you can easily visit Capri and the Amalfi Coast. It is likely to be too cool still for the beach.

Well, it's a bit early for the beach - except for walking along it. and you're going to be far too far away from Milan, Venice and even Rome for day trips there even if you wanted to.

for museums, the obvious choice is Naples and the National Archeological museum - you can get the train there from either of the two train stations near Piano di Sorrento. From the central station in Naples it's just one stop to Piazza Cavour to get to the museum. [if you click on my screen name you'll find the thread I started about what to do in an afternoon in Naples, which should give you enough ideas for a week or two!]

you should also get the train down into Sorrento proper and have a look there - there's lots to look at and it's a very charming place. And from Sorrento you can get a ferry to Capri and/or a bus to Amalfi. [have a look at my other TR on Sorrento to see what I thought about that!]

I'm sure that you'll find plenty to do and that you'll have a great trip!

Agree with ann. There are a number of nice day trips from Sorrento. Pompeii of course but you might want to check out Herculaneum as well. in my opinion that site while smaller is better preserved. There are buses and ferries to Amalfi, ferry to Capri and Sorrento itself is a great destination to explore.
We took a trip to Paestum to visit the Greek temples. That was an organized excursion but I believe you can take a bus to Salerno and the train on your own.
Here are images of our trip just to give you an idea what is in the area.

I second the suggestion of going the Paestum. You can catch the train from Sorrento to Naples, then train from Naples to Salerno and train or bus from Salerno to Paestum. Be sure to purchase your return tickets from Paestum to Salerno before you get to Paestum, as the station is unmanned.
