10 Days in Europe in Late August - Early September

I am visiting a friend in Zug, Switzerland, flying into Zurich. Looking for some ideas about other countries I might visit while there. I don't have a ton of time, but would love to see at least a couple of other cities.

If you have only ten days, I would suggest limiting yourself to two cities, Zug and one other city. Do you have ten nights on the ground? If not, two is definitely all you should try to squeeze in. If you have ten nights on the ground, that gives you nine full days, which is four days in each of two cities, plus a travel day. If you try to visit three cities, especially in places so far apart, you'll only have seven full days at the three destination, plus two travel days. That would be two full days in two of the destinations and one full day in the third. Every destination you add causes you to lose one day to travel. That's the travel law of diminishing returns.

Perhaps you could fly from Zurich to Milan, and visit one city in Italy. France, Germany, and Austria would be other logical choices from Zug, and could surely be reached by train. The train rides through the Alps are spectacular.

You should plan to fly home from the last city you visit, rather than returning to Switzerland; otherwise you lose yet another day to travel.

I personally find I enjoy travel more when I really have the time to visit a city and not just dive bomb it. But if you really want to get in three cities, maybe try a night train to give you more days of sight seeing.

If you can fly "open jaw" as bvlenci suggests, that would help too. I do understand the desire to see as much as possible!!

Have you been to Europe before? I would fly into Zurich and out of Paris. That is plenty for 9 or 10 days.
