Trenitalia- Need Help booking Rome to Levanto!!

After reading various posts, I conclude that I should not book fares through Europe Rail because of their high costs (although their website is easy to use!).
Looking at the Trenitalia website it is not as user friendly and I am confused about various classes/prices for each class. Within 1st class there are different fares?
If I have a specific travel date I assume booking the lowest 1st class fare is the thing to do?
Six of us need to travel from Rome (Termini?) to Levanto on June 26th (1:29pm). On the site I can only seem to go as far as La Spezia. Is it because the last part of the journey is on a different train system, and would that schedule not be posted yet?
If someone could help and guide me on how to book my required travel it would be much appreciated!!. THANKS

I'm not sure Trenitalia has all their trains loaded for summer yet as there should be morning trains showing for this route (morning trains show in May - summer schedules start 2nd week of June). There are a lot of fast trains Roma Termini to La Spezia (AV - Freccibianca on this route). You would book that without changes.

For La Spezia to Levanto, you buy that ticket when you get to La Spezia. It's an R train so no discounts (R ticket for that will be about 3€) and more restrictions if you advance purchase. R tickets must be validated before boarding.

When looking at the train schedule, depending on which one we take, once we arrive in La Spezia we either have 7 minutes or 15 minutes to transfer to the next train to carry on to Levanto. Is this enough time to buy a ticket and board the train?
When you mention June 2nd, is that the date that schedules are posted, ie we can't book till then? Our departure date from Canada is June 20th. And do you recommend pre-booking Rome to Levanto if we have a specific date we need to travel? thanks!

You should also be able to buy your ticket for La Spezia to Levanto when you are in Rome.

Kybourbon mentioned that the schedules would be posted the second week in June, not June 2nd.

You can buy the La Spezia/Levanto ticket from a ticket machine in Rome. It will have less restraints than an R ticket bought online (regional train). You should be able to hop on the next R train leaving La Spezia as it won't be for a certain train as long as it's an R train. If you miss the one 7 minutes or 15 minutes later, it doesn't matter. You would validate the R ticket trackside (yellow box) in La Spezia before boarding.

Your train Rome/La Spezia with either be a fast AV train or a bit slower IC train. These tickets will be train specific with assigned seats. You can't use the ticket on other trains and they don't have to be validates (show it on board). I'm sure Trenitalia will get the morning trains loaded soon (at least by the 2nd week of June ).

2nd class on the fast trains:

Scroll down for screen-by-screen instructions for using the ticket machines for your La Spezia/Levanto ticket. If using the machines in Rome, be sure to modify the departure station as it defaults to Rome (it's shown in the link).

kybourbon,
thank you for the link to the step by step screen instructions! very helpful!
So, bottom line.....should i book travel from Rome to La Spezia ahead of time (6 weeks before departure) rather than waiting until we are in Rome?
Since schedules are not up yet for the La Spezia to Levanto leg then I can purhase that at the train station before leaving for La Spezia? Is there any worry of all seats being sold out? Is this a popular route?
thanks for your help!

I would wait a bit. There should be trains that don't require a change departing Rome at 8:10, 9:40 and 12:10. I think Trenitalia just hadn't loaded them yet as they exist up until June 8 and summer schedules start June 9. None of the morning trains appear to be loaded and there should be multiple choices when you enter Rome/La Spezia of trains requiring change and trains that don't.

For La Spezia/Levanto, buy at the train station. It you want to see prices for that now, enter a date within the next 7 days. Should be just a few euro.

Seats can't sell out because R tickets don't have any assigned seats or assigned trains. Your ticket will be good for ANY R train that travels between La Spezia and Levanto. The train might be crowded or it might be empty. It all depends on how many people decide to travel at that time.

As mentioned, just before you board the R train at La Spezia you MUST validate the ticket (validate = stick it in the yellow box on the train platform which stamps it with the current date and time). You have a few hours to complete your trip once it is stamped. This guarantees that people won't reuse tickets in case the conductor never gets to your carriage to check it. Big fines are charged for unvalidated tickets.

I see that Trenitalia has posted schedules for June departures. Rome to Levanto (with a stop in La Spezia to switch to a R train)
Please advise: Is it necessary to pre-book this route or are we safe to do at train station on day of departure, or day before?
Also, is there any preference for a specific coach on the train? I see that you can select your seats or just have them pre-assign. What is best?
Thanks,

>>>Is it necessary to pre-book this route or are we safe to do at train station on day of departure, or day before?<<<

You will be able to get a train day of, but it might not be the one you want. Discounts are not sold day of so instead of the 19€ ticket on the fast AV train you will have to pay 54€. On the IC train, tickets are 9€ right now. Walk up price will be 41€. I would only buy the Rome/La Spezia in advance.

>>>Also, is there any preference for a specific coach on the train? I see that you can select your seats or just have them pre-assign. What is best?<<<

You can't select which coach, only your seats. I prefer a little distance from the end of the car as I don't want close to a restroom.
