Museum of the Moving Image

Fodor's Review:

Step inside the world of movie- and television-making at this museum full of Hollywood memorabilia. Exhibitions range from the history of the film camera to the (literally) head-spinning special effects of The Exorcist. Try your hand at interactive stations that allow you to dub your voice into Titanic, create stop-action sequences, and more. Those wishing to improve their Space Invaders score should head to the darkened video arcade on the ground floor (games are moving images, too). Film buffs will love the film retrospectives, lectures, and other special programs. At press time, the Museum was undergoing an extensive renovation and expansion, expected to be complete in early 2010 when the temporary admission of $7.50 will be raised back to $10; call ahead to confirm access to certain galleries.

  • Cost: $10; free after 4 on Fri.
  • Open: Wed. and Thurs. 11-5, Fri. 11-8, weekends 11-6:30; screenings weekends and Fri. 7:30
  • Subway: R, V to Steinway St.; N, W to 36th Ave.
