Set on 5 wooded acres by a duck pond, a creek, and a salt marsh, this old inn consists of a circa-1815 main building and three other houses from the same era. Rooms in the main inn (except rustic 3rd-floor rooms) and in the Saltworks house have a simple charm but could use some upgrading. Typical furnishings include claw-foot tubs, country antiques, lace curtains, chenille spreads, and rag rugs on hardwood floors. The two-room Carriage House is cabinlike, with rough barn-board and plaster walls. There's full-service dining at Sweet Seasons or pub dining with entertainment at the Tavern Room. Pros: Very low rates, walking distance to downtown, good restaurant and pub on-site. Cons: some units share a bath, long walk to harbor or ocean.
