The Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge headquarters, on the misleadingly named Morris Island (it's connected to the mainland), has a visitor center and bookstore, open daily 8 to 4, where you can pick up pamphlets on Monomoy and the birds, wildlife, and flora and fauna found there. A ¾-mi interpretive walking trail around Morris Island, closed at high tide, gives a good view of the refuge and the surrounding waters. The area itself is open daily for exploring from dawn to dusk. Nature's prowess is evident and perpetual in this fragile spot: in November of 2006, a fierce storm recrafted the waterways, actually linking, by land, the tip of nearby South Beach to South Monomoy Island. This natural land bridge has enabled hikers to walk the distance—something that hasn't been possible for nearly half a century. The powerful union of wind and sea will most likely change the face of the islands yet again.
