West End Inn Review

Set among the glorious aged homes of the Western Promenade, this 1871 house displays much of the era's Victorian grandeur, with high tin ceilings, intricate moldings and ceiling medallions, and a dramatic ruby-red foyer. Spacious rooms are either brightly painted or papered with traditional Waverly prints, and all have private baths and alarm clocks with MP3 player docks. For breakfast, innkeeper Beth Oliver often whips up a French toast casserole with blueberries and cream cheese; or sausage and herb quiche with a hash brown crust. Oliver is also a fountain of Portland knowledge and will cheerfully field questions, make reservations, and gently remind you to wear your walking shoes—it's a 20-minute stroll to the action downtown.
