Bin 36

Bin 36 Review

This hip hybrid—fine-dining establishment, lively wine bar, and fine cheese purveyor—serves wine and cheese any way you want it. For wine, that's by the bottle, glass, half glass, and as flights of multiple 2½-ounce tastings. For cheese, that's by the sample or flight. Or it's used as an ingredient, as in the gougères that come drizzled with truffle honey. The menu similarly encourages sampling, with lots of small-plate grazing choices. Contemporary entrées, such as braised lamb shank and ahi tuna with ratatouille, are helpfully listed with wine recommendations. An all-glass west wall and 35-foot ceilings lend loft looks to the sprawling space, which can be noisy. Nonetheless, it's a good choice for group gatherings, and, since it's open all day, between-standard-mealtime nibbles.

We visit Chicago every year or so, and always seem to manage to fit in drinks and cheese at Bin 36. It's a convenient downtown location, and offers a nice, though not huge, selection of wine flights. The cheese plates are also a good selection. For us, it makes for a great light meal, and offers a place that us parents can go and have some good wine with the kids (who enjoy the cheese plates).

Bin 36 also has a "dinner and a movie" option, which we've never been around at the right day to experience, but it sounds like a lot of fun.
