An enchanting combination of flora and fauna makes this 1904 Victorian house a welcoming retreat. The property is bathed in palms, banyans, birds of paradise, and poincianas, with cages of colorful, live parrots and swarms of butterflies adding tropical punch. Rooms are Caribbean colonial-inspired, with wood-slat floors, elegant trim, and French doors. The color scheme—key lime, cantaloupe, and other rich colors—couldn't be more evocative of the Keys. Some downstairs rooms open onto the deck, pool, and gardens designed by one of the resident owners, a landscape designer. Upstairs rooms overlook the gardens. An extensive breakfast is served poolside. Pros: inviting hot tub; massage pavilion; island getaway feel. Cons: minimum stay required (length depends on season); dark public areas; cheesy plastic lawn chairs.

Not sure what Beth the Bore from Boston is talking about - that's not the Mermaid and the Alligator I just experienced. Stayed in the Papaya and Key Lime rooms - both beautifully decorated - bed in the Key Lime room is especially comfortable. Rooms immaculately cleaned and beds changed daily. Wonderfully delicious hot breakfast served daily. Complimentary wine and soda available daily. Backyard gardens are absolutely serene - you forget the world when you're back there. Dean and Paul are great hosts and their staff is top notch - if you need anything, just ask - very helpful. High speed internet and flat screen tv in the living room are nice touches - although you'll probably be in oversized and clean in-ground hot tub in the backyard gardens. Go party on Duval Street then retreat to this relaxing santuary. Incredible vacation experience made possible by one of the best B&B's in the United States.
