One of the great railroad hotels, La Posada (it means "resting place") exudes the charm of an 18th-century Spanish hacienda. Architect Mary Colter, famous for her work at the Grand Canyon, designed and decorated the 68,000-square-foot hotel. Spanish and Native American furniture, antiques, and art permeate her designs. The lobby is a gallery for paintings by Tina Mion, one of the owners. Individually decorated rooms are restored to 1930s style and the lush gardens are a swath of green in the red-rock Colorado Plateau. If you can't spend the night, take the self-guided tour ($2 donation).
