Hawks soar on updrafts above lumpy, jungle-draped hills. The town and the big blue bay are spread out below in a breathtaking, 200-degree tableau. Under the palapa roof of this small, open restaurant romantic ballads play as waiters start you off with guacamole, fresh and cooked salsas, chopped cactus pad salad, and tostadas. Seared meats—served with grilled green onions and tortillas made on the spot—are the specialty, but you can also order seafood stew or soups. The restaurant opens at 1 PM. Don't despair about the $10 per person fee you pay to enter (apparently to discourage lookie-loos); it will be deducted from your tab. Or avoid the hassle altogether—the fee is waved for those who have made reservations.

It was an hour before sunset and had just stopped raining, we jumped in a cab to find a new place to eat with a good view of the sunset. the cab driver suggested a place a little out of the way. We were up for it, after a 15 minute ride into the mountains we arrived at an empty, open air resteraunt. the view was incredible the majority of puerto vallarta is visible before dusk. the sevice was great, food was ok. because of the rain we were the only people there. after dark the view lit up with lights, it was breathtaking!

I've tried this restaurant twice now thinking the first time was just a bad night for the staff. Not. We waited 30 minutes for a drink, two hours for a simple food order while others around us who had come much later were served. I finally went to the kitchen to find out where the order was. The order came, average quality and for the price a poor value. No explanation or apology was given. At this restaurant it isn't easy to just excuse yourself after two hours and no food because they basically have you locked in on the mountain. You can leave when they say so. I'm local here and the sad tales from the customers of this restaurant are legion. Tourists trapped in situations at this restaurant just take it in stride, pay and leave, but there are other places in Puerto Vallarta with a view that have great service and good food.

The only reason to go to the trouble and expense to go here is the view. AND, it is truly amazing! It is not about the mediocre food and perfunctory service.

Dining at Las Carmelitas is an adventure; from the drive up to the drive down. The views are breathtaking ... the food is great ... the service is on the slow side, so don't come if you are in a hurry, they want you to capture the whole evening. The sunsets are amazing and the sounds of the jungle nearby are wonderful. It can get a bit chilly up there, so bring a sweater or jacket if you go in the winter months. Call ahead for reservations and they will not charge an entrance fee...othewise, they will deduct from your bill. I visit Las Carmelitas on every trip to PV...love the Arrachera and salsa's!

What a great view! We found our cab driver was able to negotiate no "toll" to go up the hill to the restaurant and we were not charged on our bill. A concierge could do the same. However, one couple we were seated next to was double charged the "toll", even though they ordered a full dinner. Just beware, look at the check and be assertive. The service was very hospitable. The margaritas were made with good tequila (100% agave and no Cuervo). The food was below average. I ordered grilled fish with Diablo sauce. Since Diablo means "devil" and usually denotes hot and spicy, you can imagine my surprise when the fish arrived doused in ketchup. This would be a terrific place for just appetizers and cocktails at sunset.
