Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Nature Preserve/Wildlife Refuge

Updated 11/15/2012

Fodor's Review

This park, 15 km (9 miles) northwest of Munnar, is home to the endangered nilgiri tahr. You can get close to this endearingly tame mountain goat, pushed to the brink of extinction by its utter lack of suspicion toward human beings. Half the world's remaining population lives here. The sanctuary is closed for 45 days during the calving season, roughly from January to February (check ahead of time).

Rajamalai forest Munnar Kerala India

The sanctuary is a good place to soak in the scenic views of the Rajmalai Hills and unwind. If you seek adventure, you can undertake mountain trekking, rock climbing and rappelling on the outskirts of the sanctuary. The core area is off bounds to tourists and visited only by forest officials for census and research purposes. We booked the travel through Country Travel Mart. They have wide contact with hotels at munnar. It is advisable to hire a

trained local guide when trekking through the densely covered areas of the forest as it is easy to get lost. A visit to the Pothundy Dam is a must when visiting Rajmalai Wildlife Sanctuary. Boating is popular with tourists and the area near the boating place is a good place to have a picnic too.

Munnar - The jewel in the crown of God’s own country

Spread over an area of 100 Sq Kms, and about 15 Kms from Munnar, this park is home to a vast variety of rare species of butterflies, animals and birds. The endangered species of deer, the Nilgiri Tahr can also be sighted here. Be prepared with comfortable walking shoes and clothes to trek along this wide expanse to get a breathtaking view of tea plantations and the peaks and valleys of hills covered in a shroud of mist.
