Wandering the nature trail alongside the Chubut River, picking fruit from the orchard, and helping at milking time are just some of the joys of staying on this century-old working farm, where the family fills you with homemade treats and you'll rest nicely on the comfy beds. Posada Puerto Bemberg

$$$ | Fundadores Bemberg s/n, Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Less than an hour south of Puerto Iguazú (35 minutes from the falls), the posada (inn) was built in 1943 to lodge guests to the yerba mate plantation, and the new owners, a lovely and helpful couple, reopened it in 2007. The interiors were renovated but retain their charm and remarkable craftsmanship, most notably in the dining room/library. The large rooms are not fancy but very comfortably furnished. Meals for the set two-choice menu are lovingly prepared and may be enjoyed on the veranda. Activities include kayaking on the Paraná River, which borders the property, and a ride along the river to the magical and secluded salto Yasy, a small waterfall and swimming hole (or wading, in dry season), or just lazing by the swimming pool. Staff are very knowledgeable of the area's flora and fauna and, if you're in luck, will call attention to a howler monkey.

A glorious five-bedroom house designed by Alejandro Bustillo is over 200 yards of jungle from the posada, with its own access road, and is also available for up to 12 people. Built for the original worldly owners, it's filled with period furniture as well as black-and-white photographs of family here and in faraway places. The house includes its own, albeit smaller, swimming pool, and the house staff includes a cook, though guests are free to use the kitchen and outdoor parrilla.

Pros

  • Not far from Iguazú Falls
  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Relaxing atmosphere

Cons

  • Far from the city
  • Limited dining menu
  • Limited activities

Rendez-Vous Hotel

$$ | Bonpland 1484, Buenos Aires, 1414, Argentina

The fresh exterior of this French Petit Hotel pops on the streets of Palermo Hollywood, while the warm oranges, creams, and dark browns decorating the ground floor lure guests inside. Each room in the century-old house has its own color and theme, and if they bring on a feeling of calmness, it could be because they were arranged with Feng Shui principles in mind. While the style is overwhelmingly French-modern—the owner is French—Argentine touches such as Pop Art portraits of famous porteño personalities run throughout.

Pros

  • An inviting ground-floor setup for breakfast, drinks, and reading
  • Relaxing atmosphere

Cons

  • Nearby nightlife can mean street noise

Serena Hotel

$$$ | Libertad 1617, Buenos Aires, 1016, Argentina

The name of this design hotel conjures up a feeling of serenity, and the fountains in the lobby, the outdoor patio ringed with greenery, and the sizable indoor swimming pool take it to the next level. The calming aesthetic extends to the rooms with soothing cream-colored walls, cushy carpets, and furniture created with soft leather and dark wood. The armoires, headboards, and desks are by top Argentine designer Eugenio Aguirre, who created them especially for the hotel. The adults-only property is situated in the swankiest part of Recoleta—which the polite, attentive staff is happy to help you navigate—and offers a smaller, quieter base than its neighbors like the Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt.

Pros

  • The downstairs relaxation area and outdoor patio are ideal for whiling away hours
  • Smart design
  • Wonderful location

Cons

  • The gym is sparse
