Fodor's Expert Review Fiola
Washington foodies wept when Fabio Trabocchi took his Italian talents to the beloved Fiamma in New York City, but he soon returned to the District to open this refined yet ultramodern Downtown kitchen that has won two straight awards from the nation's top wine magazines. Trabocchi's flights of fancy, such as smoked-caviar-topped tuna and other raw Italian small plates he dubs "sushi," are just as delightful as his standard offerings—try the rich pappardelle with oxtail ragu or oysters with icy granita. Happy hour and lunch bring an affordable cast of small plates to go with the inventive cocktails and encyclopedic beverage list, but date night is the best way to experience this gem. Note: entrance on Indiana Avenue.
