Fodor's Expert Review State Plaza Hotel
2117 E St. NW, Washington, District of Columbia 20037, United States See on Map
This newly renovated, all-suite hotel in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood has an apartment feel in a location enviable of every tourist (the White House, Lincoln Memorial and Kennedy Center are all within easy walking distance). The suites are spacious and fresh and include a kitchenette—meaning it doesn’t matter most of the surrounding eateries close up shop over the weekend.
YOU SHOULD KNOW There are two towers, with different front desks and bellmen. It’s a good idea to confirm which tower you’re in before taking the elevator up.
room
Spacious suites have an apartment feel, with contemporary furniture, local artwork, and a chic gray-and-white color palate accented with gold. You can stock the fully-equipped kitchenette at nearby Whole Foods.
bathroom
The bathrooms greatly benefited from the recent remodel, with a shower-tub combo, designer toiletries, and separate dressing area.
lobby
The lobby has plush sofas, soft music, and gray tones accented with black and green. That said, it’s a little on the small side and you’ll only hang out here if you’re waiting for someone (or your luggage).
gym
The modest fitness room has cardio- and weight-training equipment.
You are just a few blocks from the National Mall. If you're a walker or a runner, head there for a walk/run around the monuments.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The State Plaza Hotel is located in the George Washington University neighborhood, near the State Department, with the western end of the National Mall within easy walking distance. It’s also near the Kennedy Center, perfect for an evening show. Your best bet for public transportation is the Metro; the Foggy Bottom metro stop is just a few blocks away.
Restaurants
Founding Farmers (9-minute walk) is a mega-popular, LEED-gold-certified, farm-to-table restaurant on Pennsylvania Avenue; be sure you have a reservation. CIRCA (11-minute walk) offers New American fare in a trendy setting—burgers, pasta, and fancy cocktails.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The State Plaza Hotel a nice enough aparthotel on a quiet, tree-shaded street, very convenient if we have business with the State Department or George Washington University. It's near the National Mall as well, making it a good choice for visitors. It’s been recently remodeled, making it clean and fresh. The extra-spacious suites (with kitchenettes!) are a find in an urban hotel, and are especially ideal for families. Our quieter side loves the weekends, when the neighborhood essentially shuts down.
