Campovida

Fodor's Choice

Gently made wines from Italian and Rhône varietals grown in Mendocino County organic, biodynamic, and sustainable vineyards are Campovida's focus. The historic 56-acre estate—previous owners include a local railroad magnate and the Fetzer wine-making clan—opens to the public on weekends, with the downtown tasting room ( Stock Farm, 13441 S. U.S. 101) an option four days a week.

Cappelli Wine

Fodor's Choice

Taking a cue from European shops selling everyday wines by the tap, Marco Cappelli, a respected winemaker and consultant, opened this downtown Placerville winery and tasting room in 2023. Although his wines are inexpensive, Cappelli knows where the best Northern California grapes grow. A Clarksburg Chenin Blanc and a Fair Play Barbera ranked among his early coups, all the more so given their price: less than $15 a bottle.

Cartograph Wines

Fodor's Choice

The husband-wife team behind Cartograph believes in Pinot Noirs emphasizing "balance, nuance, and complexity, rather than power and intensity." To that end, they select vineyard sites based on climate and clone compatibility, harvest their grapes early, and intervene as little as possible during the wine-making process. The resulting wines please on their own and pair well with food. Unlike many Sonoma County Pinot producers, Cartograph eschews Chardonnay for its still whites, opting for the Alsatian grape Riesling, done in a refreshingly crisp and dry style.  Sometime in 2026, the winery plans to move 2 miles north to 280 Chiquita Road, where it will be open daily for indoor and outdoor tastings.

Casino Mine Ranch

Fodor's Choice

Two brothers opened this winery named for the ranch their iconoclastic great aunt—described as a cross between Annie Oakley and Zsa Zsa Gabor—purchased in 1936. The siblings added another parcel, where tastings are held in or outside a stylish terrazzo-floored, glass-walled structure with views of the lake that fronts the property. Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Tempranillo are among the strong suits; the Greco white (from a grape either Greek or southern Italian) is among the intriguing lighter wines.

Cellardoor Winery

Fodor's Choice

The beautiful 5-mile drive on Route 52 from downtown Camden alongside Megunticook Lake to Cellardoor Winery is itself a good reason to visit, but the winery is fun, too. To discover which wine is your favorite, sip a glass ($12) or a flight of four ($17) in the magnificent barn or on the porch with views to Levenseller Mountain. Reservations for self-guided tastings are not required but are prioritized; reservations for hosted tastings ($25) are required. Buy a bottle of wine, or choose some wineglasses or other accoutrements from the shop. A cheese board and other nibbles are also available. There's also a location in Portland.

Chappellet Winery

Fodor's Choice

When Donn and Molly Chappellet established their renowned Pritchard Hill winery in 1967, they chose a rocky, tree-studded, now 640-acre property for its potential as a Cabernet Sauvignon growing site, but the vistas north to Lake Hennessey and Mt. St. Helena undoubtedly played a role, too. The vice president of wine making has worked here for three-plus decades, and with the family's second generation in charge, a sense of purpose and continuity prevails. Relaxed tastings of wines that might also include a Chenin Blanc and a Cabernet Franc take place in the cavernous original winery amid rows of stacked oak barrels. Book the April–October Pritchard Hill ATV tour for an exciting spin through the grounds.

Chenoweth Wines

Fodor's Choice

Distinguished producers like Kosta Browne make wines from grapes farmed by the Chenoweth family, whose ancestors settled in the redwood-studded hills northwest of Sebastopol in the mid-1800s. Charlie Chenoweth, who converted apple orchards to vineyards, reserves fruit for his wife, Amy, to craft the namesake Pinot Noirs, a Chardonnay, and a Grenache rosé. Her wines alone warrant a visit (by appointment only) to the several hundred–acre property, but the lofty Russian River Valley perspectives and hardworking but fun-loving family vibe elevate the experience exponentially. Seasonal UTV tours, sometimes conducted by the gregarious Amy herself, include a rollicking ride to sip Pinots where their grapes were grown. Other tastings take place in the woodsy Wine Shack.  Region wine bar in Sebastopol pours two Chenoweth wines year-round.

Chimney Rock Winery

Fodor's Choice

The whitewashed Cape Dutch–style structure erected by this winery's original owners, one South African, stands out against the craggy Stags Leap cliffs rising behind it. With 120 acres of vines devoted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chimney Rock’s reputation rests on several estate bottlings, some from specific vineyard blocks yielding wines with strikingly different personalities. Brazil-born Elizabeth Vianna, long an advocate of sustainable grape-growing practices, crafts the Chimney Rock wines in a smooth accessible style that sometimes belies their power. Two whites, Sauvignon Gris and the Elevage Blanc blend of the former and Sauvignon Blanc, hold their own at tastings (reservations recommended, but walk-ins possible) in several small salons and on a shaded patio.

Cliff Lede Vineyards

Fodor's Choice

Inspired by his passion for classic rock, Cliff Lede named the blocks in his Stags Leap District vineyard after hits by the Grateful Dead and other bands. Two other Lede obsessions are rock memorabilia and contemporary art like Jim Dine's outdoor sculpture Twin 6' Hearts, a magnet for the Instagram set. Despite its light-hearted vibe, this efficient, high-tech winery is anything but laid-back: cutting-edge agricultural and enological science informs the vineyard management and wine making. Lede produces a Sauvignon Blanc, another mostly Sémillon white, several Cabernet Sauvignons, and a few Bordeaux-style red blends. The Cabs, particularly Poetry, rock. Book a Backstage Tasting Lounge session to sip top-tier wines amid a rock-music-related art exhibition.

Co Dinn Cellars

Co Dinn, the owner of this downtown Sunnyside operation, spent nearly 20 years as the winemaker at renowned Hogue Cellars before establishing his own boutique winery. Top wine publications have taken notice and lavished praise on the complex unfiltered Chardonnay and juicy southern Rhône GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre). Cooper-Garrod Vineyards at Garrod Farms

Fodor's Choice

Horseback riding and wine tasting makes a great combination for a day in the mountains; it’s that duo that draws visitors to this longtime farm and winery above Saratoga. A former test pilot, George Cooper founded the winery in 1972 and all of the wine continues to be sourced exclusively from the 28 acres of vines on the estate. Don’t miss the unique Test Pilot red blends and the quiet specialty of the winery: Cabernet Franc.

Corison Winery

Fodor's Choice

Respected for three 100% Cabernet Sauvignons, Corison Winery harks back to simpler days, with tastings alfresco in view of the half century–old Kronos Vineyard or amid oak barrels inside an unadorned, barnlike facility. The straightforward approach suits the style of Cathy Corison. One of post-1960s Napa Valley's first women owner-winemakers, she eschews blending because she believes her sunny St. Helena AVA vineyards (and other selected sites) can ripen Cabernet better than anywhere else in the world. Critics tend to agree with her approach. The Library Tasting, which starts with a brief winery and vineyard tour, includes recent releases and older vintages that together illustrate Corison's consistency as a winemaker and how gracefully her wines mature. All visits are by appointment.

Coursey Graves Estate Winery

Fodor's Choice

A multihued garden reminiscent of Monet's surrounds a pond at this hillside winery whose Bennett Valley views and assiduously cultivated wines enthrall in equal measure. Above the fog line on volcanic soil, much of the property is warm enough to grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Bennett Mountain Estate Blend contains both and sometimes other Bordeaux red grapes like Malbec. Syrah is another focus, as are Pinot Noir and Napa Valley Cabernet. Guests pass through not one but two gates on the steep, narrow drive up to the glass-walled hospitality space. Group or private sessions—indoors, on the patio, or amid the garden—usually start with a Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. Reservations are a must.

Cāpo Creek Ranch

Fodor's Choice

Halfway through a wine-and-food pairing at this serenely rustic Dry Creek Valley winery, you may find yourself asking, "How does she do it?"—"she" being Dr. Mary Roy, Cāpo Creek Ranch's proprietor, winemaker, chef, and hostess with the mostest. The answer might simply be that running a winery isn't likely to faze someone who raised six kids while operating a bustling radiological imaging center. Whatever the reason, in "retirement" Roy has created a magical showcase for her mostly Rhône-style whites and reds (the stars) along with Cabernet Sauvignon, estate old-vine Zinfandel, and numerous blends. Most tastings occur outdoors facing east toward the heritage-Zin vineyard, with the cave and tasting room alternative possibilities.  You can taste wines without food, but this place is all about the pairings.

Dane Cellars

Fodor's Choice

Owner-winemaker Bart Hansen offers guests a curious portal into local wine history: his tasting room, known as "The Tank," occupies a 10,000-gallon-plus former redwood fermenting vessel a winery across the street first used more than a century ago. With long stints at nearby Benziger, Lasseter, and Kenwood wineries, Hansen is steeped in Sonoma Valley lore and, more consequentially, the area's best vineyard sources. Old-vine Zinfandel is one concentration, but he also crafts a Sauvignon Blanc from 1980s vines at Glen Ellen's Beltane Ranch and a red Rhône blend from Rossi Vineyard, first planted in 1910. Tastings of these and other wines sometimes occur on a patio outside The Tank.

DaVero Farms & Winery

Fodor's Choice

Regenerative organic and biodynamic farming is a core priority of this forward-thinking winery devoted to wines from Italian grapes. Names like Vermentino, Sangiovese, Barbera, and Primitivo may ring a bell, but the revelations here include the Falanghina and Fiano whites and Sagrantino, a lush yet earthy wine that’s as pleasingly complex as a Bordeaux red. There’s also Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir in Italian). All wine tastings involve oils from olives grown on-site (one session explores only the oils), but for a total immersion, consider the experience that starts with a tour past olive trees and into a fruit, vegetable, and flower garden over to the pigpen.

Davis Estates

Fodor's Choice

Owners Mike and Sandy Davis transformed a ramshackle property into a plush winery whose predominantly Bordeaux-style wines live up to the magnificent setting. In fashioning the couple's haute-rustic appointment-only hospitality center, the celebrated Wine Country architect Howard Backen incorporated cedar, walnut, and other woods. In fine weather, many guests sit on the open-air terrace's huge swinging sofas, enjoying broad valley views while tasting Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay whites, with Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Cabs and Cab-heavy blends among the reds. DeLille Cellars

Fodor's Choice

One of Washington's most vaunted producers of Bordeaux-style wines also occupies one of the most impressive tasting rooms in Woodinville, a handsome and spacious facility set inside the town's former Redhook Brewery building. There's a lovely outdoor patio and a lounge with a full dining menu, and the tasting room is also next door to the Willows Lodge and its renowned Herbfarm restaurant. If you're stopping by just to sample vino in the tasting room, you can order lighter snacks—cheese and charcuterie plates, truffle popcorn—to nosh while you sip.

Desert Wind Winery

Fodor's Choice

This expansive airy tasting room housed in an elegant Santa Fe–style building featuring a vast patio overlooking the Yakima River is one of the highlights of any wine tour in the valley. Dineen Vineyards

Fodor's Choice

Established in 2001 on the site of a historic apple orchard on the lower slopes of the Rattlesnake Hills, this popular winery with a focus on sustainability specializes in both estate-grown Bordeaux- and Rhone-style varietals, from the supple and earthy Cabernet Franc to a French oak-aged Roussanne-Viognier blend. The handsome tasting room adjoins a gable-roofed terrace surrounded by colorful gardens.

Dobbes Family Estate

Fodor's Choice

In-demand winemaker Joe Dobbes provides custom wine-making services to many Oregon wineries too small to have their own winery or winemaker and also makes several lines of his own wines, ranging from his everyday "Wine By Joe" label to the premium Dobbes Family Estate label featuring great Pinot Noir, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc. In addition to a few single-vineyard Pinot Noir bottlings, Dobbes focuses on blends from multiple vineyards to provide consistent, balanced, and interesting wines. Flights and wine by the glass are available in the tasting room, and unlike many wineries in the region, walk-ins are welcome.

Domaine Carneros

Fodor's Choice

A visit to this majestic château is an opulent way to enjoy the Carneros District—especially in fine weather, when the vineyard views are spectacular. The château was modeled after an 18th-century French mansion owned by the Taittinger family. Carved into the hillside beneath the winery, the cellars produce sparkling wines reminiscent of those made by Taittinger, using only Los Carneros AVA grapes. Enjoy flights of sparkling wines or Pinot Noirs with cheese and charcuterie plates, caviar, or smoked salmon. Tastings are by appointment.

Domaine Drouhin Oregon

Fodor's Choice

When the French winery magnate Robert Drouhin ("the Sebastiani of France") planted a vineyard and built a winery in the Red Hills of Dundee back in 1987, he set local oenophiles abuzz. His daughter Veronique is now the winemaker and produces silky and elegant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Ninety acres of the 225-acre estate has been planted on a hillside to take advantage of the natural coolness of the earth and to establish a gravity-flow winery.

The Donum Estate

Fodor's Choice

The team at this prominent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producer prizes viticulture—selecting vineyards with superior soils and microclimates, planting compatible clones, and farming organically with rigor—over wine-making wizardry. Tasting areas that include a contemporary white board-and-batten structure and a pavilion with a conical multicolor glass canopy afford hilltop views of Los Carneros, San Pablo Bay, and beyond. Appointments (last-minute unlikely) are required to taste these wines hailed for their "power yet elegance.” The nearly five dozen large-scale museum-quality contemporary sculptures placed amid the vines, including works by Ai Weiwei, Louise Bourgeois, Keith Haring, and Anselm Kiefer, add a touch of high culture to a visit here.

Dutton-Goldfield Winery

Fodor's Choice

In the 1990s, winemaker Dan Goldfield teamed up with fifth-generation farmer Steve Dutton to establish this small operation devoted to cool-climate Pinot Noirs. Goldfield is less involved with day-to-day wine making than before, but the goal remains the same: to take Dutton's meticulously farmed fruit, along with sourced grapes, and "make the winemaker unnoticeable." Well, not quite. What impresses the most about these wines, which include a Pinot Blanc, two Chardonnays, a Pinot Noir rosé, and Syrah, is their sheer artistry. Dutton and Goldfield helped revive the remaining acres of the 1880s vineyard that produces grapes for the juicy, spicy Morelli Lane Zinfandel.

Edio Vineyards at Delfino Farms

Fodor's Choice

Apple growers since 1964, the Delfino family occupies one of El Dorado County's most idyllic sites. Joan Delfino's apple pies and fun farm events gained the clan early notice. In the 2010s, her grandchildren started a winery named for her husband, local agricultural icon Edio Delfino. They pour their superb whites and reds in a gleaming-silver contemporary space whose patio perches over apple trees surrounded by grapevines ringed by a forest. Wine tasting takes place year-round; bakery visits, apple events, and indie concerts occur seasonally.

Emmitt-Scorsone Wines

Fodor's Choice

Palmer Emmitt and Michael Scorsone operate their boutique winery out of a warehouse-like facility whose garden sits above a sharp Russian River bend. The two make the wines, and guests at tastings meet one or both, learning firsthand how they started their winery “with no investors, consultants, or employees,” no mean feat these days. Cabernet Sauvignon drives the Judge Palmer brand (Emmitt's namesake grandfather was a Gold Country judge), which also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc. The reds of the Domenica Amato label, named for Scorsone's Sicilian grandmother, include blends, Barbera, and a Grenache that critics consistently praise. The whites come from distinctive Italian grapes like Cortese, Falanghina, and Fiano.  It's okay to bring a picnic; a noted chef pairs the wines with his food on weekends.

En Garde Winery

Fodor's Choice

Sommeliers and critics extol the Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Sauvignons of Csaba Szakál, En Garde's Hungarian-born winemaker and owner. To create what he describes as “aromatic, complex, lush, and juicy” wines, Szakál selects top Sonoma County vineyards for the Pinots and the Napa Valley's Diamond Mountain, Mt. Veeder, and other high-elevation sites for the Cabernets. The hosts at his highway's-edge tasting room provide a wealth of knowledge about his wine-making goals and methods. If you're lucky, Szakál will be around to discuss his wines (he loves to), which also include Chardonnay, other whites, and rosé of Pinot Noir.

Ernest Vineyards

Fodor's Choice

The founders' appreciation for Burgundian-style food-friendly wines from cool-climate grapes informs the viticulture and wine making of this small winery with a dapper in-town tasting room. The space's muted greens and browns and furnishings inspired by mid-century modern style echo the restraint and balance of the estate Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from West Sonoma County AVA fruit. Look also for less-seen whites like Aligoté and Petite Arvine and reds like Trousseau. The latter's grapes, from Mendocino County, are picked as soon as their sugar levels begin attracting local bears.  Healdsburg hosts pour wines by the glass, flight, or bottle; flights only are offered at the winery's shared production facility in Windsor.
