If you get to Alaska and discover you've left some critical camping or outdoor recreation gear behind, REI rents camping, skiing, and paddling equipment. Rogue Running

Austin runners frequent this shop as much for its selection of everything from Asics to Adidas shoes as for the expert advice on which pair to pick. Starting out as a training program back in 2004, Rogue opened a storefront after rousing success and today has two other Austin training centers and another in Cedar Park. Runners can join clubs to train for anything from a 5K to a full marathon, or just join a free community-run with other local runners. The store has a full fuel bar serving smoothies and even beer and wine, along with the hydration and energy snacks you’ll need to hit the happy trails.

Scheels

Just off Interstate 90, the enormous Scheels store carries a wide selection of all-weather hiking gear, footwear, and clothes, as well as binoculars suitable for bird-watchers and all manner of other outdoor recreational gear. This is a perfect place to stock up for all of your Black Hills adventures.

Scheels

It's easy to spot this behemoth of a sporting goods store against the horizon. In fact, Scheels is so big it has a Ferris wheel inside. You can also bowl, admire the exotic fish in the floor-to-ceiling aquariums, have lunch, or simply shop while the kids play in the arcade. Scheels is two very impressive stories of apparel, fishing gear, firearms, home goods, ski equipment, bikes, Montana-themed gifts, and just about everything you need to enjoy the local outdoors. It also rents out ski equipment, snowboards, and snowshoes from November through March. Bike rentals are available in the summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Schnee's

In business since 1946, this local sporting goods legend offers two rooms packed with fishing gear and Western gear, including its signature Pac boots made in its own Bozeman boot factory.

If you need outdoor equipment of any kind, this well-equipped sporting goods store probably has it. They can also tune your skis and bikes, and rent you either if you didn't bring your own. There's also a store in the Whitefish Mountain Mall off Highway 93.

Surf N Sea

This water-sports store has everything you need for an active vacation under one roof. Purchase rash guards, swimwear, T-shirts, footwear, hats, and shorts. Book scuba-diving tours and lessons and rent kayaks, snorkeling or scuba gear, spears for free diving, surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, and bodyboards. Experienced surfing instructors will take beginners to the small breaks on the North Shore beaches, with their notoriously huge (winter) or flat (summer) waves. Warning to fishing enthusiasts: a fishing pole is the one ocean apparatus this shop doesn't carry.

Surf N Wear's Beach House

Trek Bicycle Lamar

South Austin

With ample trails and roads with generous bike lanes, Austin is home to many serious bicyclists, and this homegrown shop has been outfitting them for more than three decades. Seasoned athletes use Trek as a resource.
