Hasegawa General Store

Built in 1910, this filled-to-the-rafters Hana institution isn't fancy, but it's one of Maui's oldest family-run businesses and it offers one-stop shopping. Here, you can buy fishing tackle, groceries, beach towels, and branded merchandise that makes for great souvenirs. You also can buy the newspaper, although it's not always delivered on time. Be sure to check out the bulletin board for information on local events.

Hatch on Maine

This exceptional shop specializes in lovely, locally made wares, including jewelry, unusual gifts, and baby items. Just up the street, its sister store, Hatch Home, features new and antique accents for the home as well as a wide color selection of Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan.

Hoof & The Horn

Given the name, you might assume that this is a pet shop or fancy feed store. But unless you want to pamper your pooch with Jenni Earle's positively inscribed bandanas, this is a store for free spirits of any gender or age who appreciate colorful and comfy clothes, candles, crystals, witty cards, cool tchotchkes, and the occasional hat customization pop-up. There's also a lot of park-theme paraphernalia and desert-inspired art.

Horses Are Good Company

Any town with paniolo (cowboy) culture, where folks still ride the back roads at sunset, needs an old-style general store. Offering a quaint mix of both practical goods and finery, this westernmost Western shop has boots for mucking out stables, shirts too fine to wear roping, saddles, gifts for all ages, farm decor, and shelves stocked with hard-to-find soda pop varieties.

Housekeeping Camp General Store

You'll find the basics here for picnics, campfires, and other outdoor activities.

Hungry Jack's General Store

This old-fashioned general store is a one-stop shop for food (many products come from nearby farmers and ranchers), unique gifts, and beverages. It has a liquor license and carries a wide, for the area, variety of spirits and wines.

Jack's Country Store

Since 1885, this beloved (and massive) general store has been dispensing everything from razor clam harvesting gear to boating supplies to, these days, all sorts of toys, beach gear, and anything else you might need for your seaside vacation.

Kikkerland

West Village

Peddling design-friendly gifts, weird toys, curious gadgets, wind-up objects, and quirky curiosities, Kikkerland makes for a fun browse. Maybe you didn't even realize you really need that solar-powered waving Queen Elizabeth II figurine or that set of cat butt refrigerator magnets, until you lay eyes on it here.

Lanai's only gas station is a convenient stop to fill your belly, too. The on-site Plantation Deli is famous for its massive sandwiches packed with quality ingredients, as well as other delicious items. Snacks, beer, souvenirs, and friendly faces round out the selection.

Liberty & Vine Old Country Store

This country store owned by proud Montana natives is housed in a historic brick building dating back to 1914. It boasts a wide selection of made-in-Montana merchandise in addition to one-of-a-kind finds in its antique warehouse. It also has a decent-sized market and grocery section (think like Cracker Barrel's gift shop, but more local, premium products).

Lodgepole Market Center

You'll find gifts, toys, books, souvenirs, and outdoor equipment in Sequoia National Park's largest store. Its grocery department has a fairly wide selection of items, some of them organic, including grab-and-go items for hikes and picnics. Across the hall is a café with various dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Lynchburg Hardware & General Store

More a souvenir shop than a hardware store, here you'll find lots of Jack Daniel’s memorabilia and other local products. It's a good place to stop after visiting the distillery, as you won't find any souvenirs there. However, you won't find any booze here, so if you want to bring some home from the source, best to buy it at the distillery.

Mary Margaret’s Mercantile

This elegant emporium sells clothing (for ladies and babies) that are by turns pretty and edgy; women's hats in a handful of retro styles; lustrous jewelry; hand-spun yarns; and myriad other gifts (as well as lovely papers to wrap them in).

Modern General Feed & Seed

Railyard District

With a clean, orderly aesthetic that seems right out of the pages of Kinfolk, this upscale take on a general store carries gorgeous kitchenware and table linens, from salvaged-olive-wood cutting boards to handwoven dish towels. Fine hardware, garden tools, and books related to kitchen and home are also on offer. It's adjacent to and run by the team at Vinaigrette restaurant, and you can dine here, too—there's a juice bar and a small café proffering delicious breakfast fare, sandwiches, pies, and more. Owner Erin Wade is well-known in the restaurant community for her creative sustainability solutions, such as reusable take-out containers, to-go cups, and composting initiatives.

Old Country Store and Museum

A quirky spot to pick up maple syrup, aged cheeses, jams, molasses, penny candy, and other treats, this rambling shop dates to 1781 and also contains antique farm and forging equipment and other artifacts.

Old Faithful Basin Store

Recognizable by the wooden "Hamilton's Store" sign over the entrance, this shop dates to 1897 and is the second-oldest building in the park. The old-fashioned soda fountain serves up all your ice-cream favorites, including beloved huckleberry shakes.

Old Sautee Store

This unique shop has been operating continuously since 1872. The front part of the store operates more as a museum, with antique farming implements, old-timey tonics and soaps, and even caskets on display. The retail store, influenced by an earlier owner's Scandinavian heritage, continues to sell Swedish farmer's cheese and Norwegian flatbread. Shoppers can also pick up old-time candy and toys. You can even grab lunch at the Old Sautee Market behind the shop.

Pine Isle Market

One of Lanai City's two all-purpose markets, Pine Isle stocks everything from beach toys and electronics to meats and vegetables. The staff is friendly, and it's the best place around to buy fresh fish.

Port Clyde General Store

After suffering a devastating fire in September 2023, the General Store has reopened, albeit on a smaller scale, while they rebuild. Look for the green clapboard building with red trim a few steps to the right of the ferry landing. This is an old-time, honest-to-goodness general store, with wide-plank floors and an inventory that offers a little bit of everything: groceries, pastries, candy, wines, liquor—even live lobsters. Outside, a sign touts the "Native Ice" for sale.

Ranch General Store

This convenience store carries groceries, souvenirs, camping supplies, and other basics.

Rank's Mercantile

Opened in 1864, Rank's Mercantile is Montana's oldest continuously operating store. Period clothing, books, toys, gifts, and groceries are for sale here.

Rodman's Discount Foods and Drugstore

Upper Northwest

The rare store that carries wine, cheese, and space heaters, Rodman's is a fascinating hybrid of Target and Dean & DeLuca. The appliances are downstairs, the imported peppers and chocolates upstairs. It opened in 1955.

Ruby's Inn General Store

On a busy evening, this giant mercantile bustles with tourists picking through souvenirs that range from sweatshirts to wind chimes. There's also Western wear, children's toys, holiday gifts, and groceries (albeit with pretty high prices), plus camping. Need a folding stove, sleeping bag, or fishing gear? You'll find it at Ruby's. You can also cross Main Street to where this ever-expanding complex has added a line of shops trimmed like an Old West town, complete with candy store and rock shop.

The Shelburne Country Store

As you enter this store, you'll feel as though you've stepped back in time. Walk past the potbelly stove and take in the aroma emanating from the fudge neatly piled behind huge antique glass cases, alongside a vast selection of penny candies and chocolates. There are creemees, of course, but here the specialties are candles, weather vanes, glassware, and local foods.

The Smiling Cow

Jam-packed with gifts, souvenirs, fudge, books, cards, tote bags, home-decor items, jewelry, clothing, and so much more, this inviting, old-fashioned store has been a fixture on Main Street since 1940. Dogs are always welcome, and always get a biscuit. Don't miss the little back porch overlooking the harbor. Locals look forward to the annual half-price sale before the store closes in late October.

The Vermont Country Store

This store opened in 1946 and is still run by the Orton family, though it has become something of an empire, with a large catalog and online business. One room is set aside for Vermont Common Crackers and bins of fudge and copious candy. In others you'll find nearly forgotten items such as Clubman aftershave, as well as practical items like sturdy outdoor clothing. Nostalgia-evoking implements dangle from the rafters. The associated Mildred's Dairy Bar next door serves ice cream and, if you can’t get enough, there’s a second store on Route 103 in Rockingham.

Village Store

The Yosemite Valley's largest store has an extensive selection of groceries (including many organic items), household products, and personal-care items. It also has an extensive gift and souvenir shop.

The Warren Store

This more-than-a-century-old general store has everything you'd hope to find in tiny but sophisticated Vermont: a nice selection of local beer and wine, cheeses, baked goods, strong coffee, and delicious sandwiches and prepared foods. In summer, grab a quick lunch on the small deck by the water; in winter, warm up at the wood stove. Warm, woolly clothing and accessories can be found upstairs.

Wawona Store

The Wawona area's only market carries essentials (for some, that means ice cream) in its grocery section. There's also a gift shop.
