Just Peachy

When driving in and even near Fredericksburg in the summer, you can almost smell the fresh, sweet aroma of peaches all around. The Fredericksburg–Stonewall area is known as the Peach Capital of Texas. More than one-third of the peach production in the state happens in this area. The sandy soils and cool (but not too cold) winter climate merge to create ideal conditions for peach production. The process of pruning the orchards, managing the ripening process, and harvesting is a year-round affair, and one that is well worth the work when peach season comes around. (Depending on the weather, the season can begin as early as the beginning of May and end as late as August.) Some farms will even let you grab a crate and pick your own peaches off the tree.
