The Best Motels in Austin
Austin is known more as being a hotel kind of city, but it still features a handful of motels, old and new, for the budget-conscious traveler.
Super 8 Austin
Why it made the list
This motel is by no means the most lavish choice near Downtown Austin, but what it has going for it is proximity and price. Located a few blocks from the Texas Capitol and typically running $85-$90 a night, it’s a good choice if you need to stay central on a budget. The rooms and lobby are pretty standard, but the pool and giant parking lot give the place a couple of extra brownie points.
Lone Star Court
Why it made the list
This new property at The Domain may have all the bells and whistles of now, but the design and décor scream 1950s motel. The rooms feature old-timey fixtures, like Smeg fridges and mid-century couches, and the hotel’s color palette is Robin’s egg blue, coral and mustard. Guests are encouraged to enjoy activities of yesteryear, like taking a dip in the pool or roasting s’mores in the courtyard.
Austin Motel
Why it made the list
This iconic motel off of South Congress Avenue debuted in 1938 and has stayed a city favorite because of its memorable neon sign. Hotelier Liz Lambert took over the aging place in 2017 and breathed a little life into without compromising its retro charm. The lobby, rooms and pools are still the same size, but the property now features Technicolor walls and mod furniture.
