Lazy Dog

$$ | South Strip

As casino companies relax their historically strict no-pets policies, canine companions are popping up with increasingly frequency on the Strip. While they're still no-go inside restaurants, they're frequently welcomed by those with patios, including this spot first established in Las Vegas at Town Square. The name's a clue, of course, as is the fact that LD has a special menu for dogs. As for humans, they'll find a varied menu including such starters of spicy tuna poke on crispy sushi rice, or Cajun fries with chipotle-ranch dipping sauce. Entrees include such homey choices as campfire pot roast, or a chicken pot pie, as well as steaks, burgers, sandwiches, and salads. There's a menu for human kids, too, as well as a gluten-sensitive menu; brunch dishes such as mountain berry pancakes and quiche are served on weekends. Suburban locations are in Summerlin and Henderson.

Lella Alimentari

$ | Williamsburg

Tucked in Williamsburg's old-school Italian American residential area is this homey Italian café adorned with old vintage toys and other nostalgic knickknacks. They're known for serving proper Italian coffee to sip along with their several breakfast offerings, daily soups, pastries, or their house-made piadines (unleavened Italian flatbread) filled with meats and cheeses—or even just Nutella.

The Lincoln

$$

Napa River views and multiple indoor and outdoor dining spaces make a visit to this pet- and family-friendly restaurant and sports bar a decent choice for beer and cocktail-friendly comfort fare. Bourbon deviled eggs, adobo chicken wings, salmon lollipops (on skewers), and a combo of hash browns and mac and cheese are typical shareable starters, with tacos, smash burgers, and pasta dishes among the more filling options.

The Living Room on Main

$$$

Hand-picked antique furnishings add charm to this downtown spot, which specializes in Mediterranean-inspired small plates and spectacular cocktails. For a little more sustenance consider the birria tacos, Wagyu beef sliders, or entrées such as black angus rib eye or saffron fennel seared salmon. Outdoor dining along the sidewalk is an attractive option on nice days, and at night there's live music by quality performers.

Lou's

$ | East Austin

Housed in an old East Austin tire shop, this counter-service outdoor café is a favorite of families and on-the-go locals. Local hospitality juggernauts Larry McGuire and Liz Lambert kept the Aztec iconography, walk-up service, and sparse layout of the preexisting spot, and the new back patio is ideal for lazy lunches, family outings, and weekend day-drinking. The rotisserie chicken and burgers are popular, and ice-cold draft beer keeps things cool on hot summer days.

Luchador Brewing Company

$

In addition to strong cervezas, which are brewed on-site (or at the larger, Chino Hills flagship) in four 10-barrel tanks, this taproom serves up Tijuana-style street food (tacos, tortas, churros, esquites) from a built-in, vintage food truck.

Lucy's Retired Surfers Restaurant and Bar

$ | Warehouse District

This bar, courtyard, and dining room is a dog- and family-friendly spot for a margarita, fried seafood, or a southwestern-style snack. The menu pays homage to surfing pioneers with bios and specialty dishes. On weekends, tables are cleared near the bar for impromptu dance parties.

Luna Sea Fish House

$$

Sustainable, line-caught wild seafood—including albacore, cod, halibut, and, when in season, Dungeness crab—straight from the owner's boat is the draw at this festive weathered restaurant with colorful indoor and outdoor seating areas. Fish-and-chips of all stripes, including clam and salmon, are served, but the fish tacos and a sinful dish called slumgullion—clam chowder baked with cheese and bay shrimp—are the most popular choices. You can also buy fresh fish to go. There's a second location 15 miles up U.S. 101 in Seal Rock.

Main Streets Market & Cafe

$

Cyclists, families, and sightseers pack into this brick building, which was used to store munitions during the Revolutionary War. Wood floors and blackboard menus add a touch of nostalgia, but the extensive menu includes many classic dishes, including mac and cheese, fish-and-chips, and steamed mussels. Breakfast offerings, served all day, include a variety of eggs Benedicts, a breakfast burrito, and omelets. At lunch, try the house-made chili, a burger, or a variety of salads. Be prepared to wait at this bustling spot. In season, there are outdoor tables.

Maine Beer Company

$$

Of the half dozen breweries in Freeport, the Maine Beer Company is a standout. Its beer is well crafted, as are its salads, charcuterie, and wood-fired pizzas, and you can dine indoors or out. It's a popular place, so reservations are recommended, though not required. Every year, the owners donate a percentage of profits to charitable organizationsparticularly environmental causes.

Marisi

$$$ | La Jolla

Handmade pasta, Italian-hearth cooking, and classic cocktails are the winning formula for this La Jolla restaurant inspired by the best of Italian cuisine. Grab an indoor table near the bar, or one in the open-air dining space where heat lamps and fairy lights bring warmth on those rare, chilly nights. Although the entrées are on point, it’s really the starters that steal the show, like the marinated olives, chicken liver mousse, garlic prawns, and roasted bone marrow. The smoky birch-wood beets with goat cheese, pistachio, and raspberry will have you contemplating how to replicate the dish at home. Scallops are served on a bed of cauliflower puree and the in-house pastas are generous on the sauces, including the Bolognese with pasture-raised beef and farmer’s market soffritto. Be wise and make a reservation to avoid the wait, especially on weekends.

Marker 88

$$$

A few yards from Florida Bay, this popular seafood restaurant, completely renovated in 2023, has large picture windows that offer great sunset views, though most patrons dine outside on the sand. The menu includes such irresistible entrées as lobster linguini and a prime rib eye. In addition, there are sandwiches, a burger, and sushi. And you can't miss the restaurant's famous Key lime pie and seasonal fruit crisp. The extensive property has two tiki bars and a boutique.

Mast Landing Brewing Company

$$

Pouring beloved locally brewed craft beer (everything from Kölsch to Peanut Butter Milk Stout with some sours and pale ales thrown in), Mast Landing is a mellow and fun hangout both inside its expansive taproom and outdoor patio; well-behaved and leashed dogs are welcome on the latter. Delicious specialty burgers (like the green chili cheeseburger) and sandwiches and shareables like pizza sticks and nachos are available from the neighboring Nighthawk's Kitchen.

Maxine's on Shine

$$$ | Downtown Orlando

A holdover from when neighborhood restaurants were actually in a neighborhood, award-winning Maxine's is casual, hip, local, and friendly. The menu ranges from sophisticated seafood to brisket burgers and Black Angus filet mignon. The wine list is unique and special, and the bar rivals the extended outdoor seating for popularity. There's live music several times a week, an unusual Friday brunch, and special events feature wine dinners and drag cabaret nights.

McLoon's Lobster Shack

$$

You know that the lobster and other seafood is fresh at this quintessential shack, just east of Tenants Harbor and at the end of a scenic, winding shoreside byway—the owner's family owns the wholesale lobster company on the next wharf over, where local lobstermen tie up to deliver their catches. In addition to generously stuffed lobster rolls, the menu usually includes crab rolls, crab cakes, grilled clams, and a couple of nonseafood items. Save room for a slice of freshly baked pie or a whoopie pie. Order at the window, and settle at a picnic table with broad, serene views of the bay, islands, and the working harbor. This is a BYOB place, with regulars often interpreting the "B" to mean not only a bottle of wine, but also a bouquet of flowers in a jar or maybe a birthday cake.

Mike's Taco Club

$ | Ocean Beach

Tucked away on the bottom floor of a tattoo parlor, this funky little taco shop has a drink menu larger than the Mexican food lineup (but don't let that dissuade you). Place your order next to the wall of bottle caps, and then head to the pet-friendly street-side patio that draws a crowd for the hearty burritos wrapped in warm, soft tortillas and authentic salsas that range from traditional red salsa to chipotle cream. Prepare to wait a few minutes for those no-skimp octopus tacos, and thick steak burritos. On Friday and Saturday, this hole-in-the-wall cures late-night munchies with carne asada fries and a 10 pm last call.

Momed

$$$ | Atwater Village

The perfect pairing of simplicity and complexity, Momed serves Mediterranean fare that feels comforting yet upscale. The welcoming atmosphere is just as perfect for a romantic date night as it is for a more convivial brunch with friends.

Monarch Ocean Pub

$$ | Del Mar

Over the past decade, this coveted ocean-view spot in Del Mar has seen restaurants come and go, but finally Monarch did it right by transforming an 8,000-square-foot facility into dining space, an entertainment venue, and a sundeck for patrons and their pups. Inside, the California coastal menu itself is as cool as the 1970s decor, with rattan furniture and a poster of Tom Selleck greeting you at the bar; outside a bridge connects the restaurant to “Monarch On The Deck” where grab-'n'-go goodies can be enjoyed with live music Sunday from 3 to 6. Good luck wrapping your mouth around the short rib pastrami sandwich, brined for five days and piled high on toasted marbled rye. There’s no skimping on the lobster and shrimp sliders, and the boat fries are perfect for scooping homemade ranch or aioli dip. Burgers, salads, and wood-fired smoked wings are just the right portions to save room for the Hawaiian doughnuts with Tahitian vanilla gelato.

The Morrison

$$ | Atwater Village

A friendly neighborhood Scottish pub, the Morrison comes with a bit of an upmarket flair, a kids' menu, and even dishes for your canine friends. And of course it serves a hearty, boozy brunch. Come here for a laid-back-pub vibe with slightly elevated dining.

Moss Beach Distillery

$$

Every "best patio" article in the Bay Area features this oceanfront restaurant (and former speakeasy) with a beautiful view, whether it's sunny or foggy. The menu is always fresh and fun with a general emphasis on fish and seafood. In reality, it's just as well known for the many dogs who adore the patio. The drinks menu is uninspired, but any beverage will taste better with a sunset vantage point like this restaurant has.

140 Beach Way, Moss Beach, CA, 94038, USA
650-728–5595
Known For
  • Seafood sliders
  • Anchor Steam beer-battered artichoke hearts

It's perfect for hungry travelers seeking an affordable but filling meal. The atmosphere is laid-back and family-friendly, and seating is at picnic tables outdoors. You can doctor the dogs and pretzels at the mustard bar.

Murphys Pourhouse

$

The scene's light and lively indoors and out at this pub whose 16 taps dispense everything from pale ales to studly stouts. The kitchen turns out well-made snacks, salads, burgers, wraps, and a slew of sandwiches on various breads.

Native Brews Tap & Grill

$$

This newcomer to Cherokee's dining options was an immediate hit, with entrées like roasted blackberry chicken and peanut-crusted trout with shrimp Florentine sauce that go beyond much of the basic fare available in town. They outsource their Native Brews label, but it's the place to find a craft IPA or stout in a place that only legalized alcohol sales in 2021.

1897 Tsali Blvd., Cherokee, NC, 28719, USA
828-497–2739

  • Lively local bar scene
  • Outdoor hangout space with games

North Beach Bar and Grill

$
Between the historic Tybee Island Lighthouse and North Beach lies one of the island's most colorful, Caribbean-inspired eateries. The menus feature local and sustainable seafood, including delectable crab cakes and the fresh citrus shrimp salad, along with lots of family-friendly options. Find live music on the large porch on some nights, or grab a seat at the bar for a local beer or frosty mixed drink.

Ocean Grill & Bar

$$$
Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Ocean Grill serves up fresh Key West seafood in good portions at fair prices. The "Scalouper" is just of one the unique offerings: jumbo diver scallops sliced on the diagonal and served atop pan-seared, local black grouper with a mint puree—sounds odd, but it tastes delightfully fresh. Bring your dog and sit on the patio as roosters play in the courtyard, or dine inside amid cloud-painted trim and white brick walls painted with giant words of cooking wisdom.

Odd Alewives Farm Brewery

$$

Chosen as Maine's best tasting room by readers of Down East magazine in 2021, Odd Alewives is set in a beautifully restored old barn that's a cozily rustic place to grab a bite and brew, whether you're a beer aficionado or not. The beers—some of which feature herbs and flowers grown on the farm—range from saisons and farmhouse ales to a dark black ale; food offerings, which vary from week to week, include pizzas baked in a wood-fired oven, tacos, and meats cooked on an Argentinian wood-fired grill.

  • Relaxing, welcoming atmosphere
  • Excellent, unusual beers
  • Delicious, wood-fired food

Paddy's Raw Bar

$$

Paddy's is the place locals will tell you about if they like you. Tucked away on the bayside of St. George, it's got the casual vibe of a beach shack with lots of outdoor seating. Even the indoor bar and tables bring the outside in—dogs and swimsuits are welcome. Raw oysters are king here, but be sure to try one of the chef's creative specials, like Captain Clint's spicy Big Fish SGI: oysters steamed with jalapeño, Parmesan, and Old Bay seasoning.

Pancho & Lefty's Cantina Sylvan Park

$$ | Sylvan Park

Expect fresh ingredients and friendly neighborhood service at Pancho & Lefty’s. There are plenty of savory tacos (don't miss the barbacoa or adobe chicken), fajitas, and quesadillas to choose from, which we suggest you complement with one or two of their signature margaritas or boozie slushies. There's another location in Melrose.

Peaceful Side Social

$

Peaceful Side quickly became a prime local hangout when it opened in 2022, thanks to its comfortable outdoor seating area and an appealing menu of sourdough pizzas and a solid local beer selection. They've since opened an adjacent taco bar and have announced plans to brew their own beer on the premises.
