Arepa Lady

$ | Jackson Heights Fodor's Choice

The Arepa Lady, originally known for slinging cheesy, golden arepas (stuffed corn cakes) from her famed street cart on Roosevelt Avenue has since established three stand-alone restaurants across New York City. The Jackson Heights location is the original “mother restaurant” and keeps to the classics like arepa de queso (freshly ground corn flour mixed with cheese) and arepa de choclo, served with your choice of meat. Try the popular chicharrón (smoked pork belly) or Colombian chorizo (which is sliced, rather than ground up). Expect to find Manhattanites, locals, and tourists alike sipping sangria and margs while getting their fill of savory cakes at this charming eatery.

Arroyo Vino

It's worth making the trek out to Santa Fe's western mesa to dine at this outstanding bistro/wineshop with a following among locals. At the store, stock up on often hard-to-find vintages from all over the world (for a $30 corkage fee, you can enjoy your Bordeaux or Albariño in the airy dining room or, when the weather allows, the charming outdoor patio) and enjoy the menu of contemporary American fare that changes regularly and is based on the incredible variety of seasonal produce grown on Arroyo Vino's on-site farm. Of particular note are the house handmade pastas and fresh fish dishes—depending on the season, these can include offerings such as cavatelli in spicy tomato sauce with house-made pork sausage and broccolini or line-caught King salmon with Italian black rice, garden-fresh radicchio, shaved fennel, and ramp pesto. Another popular menu item is chef Allison Jenkins's chicken liver pâté with house-made preserves, to which many regulars assign a "best-ever" designation. Arroyo Vino also has a full bar. Chefs Charles and Megan Fells started a dining renaissance on Poughkeepsie's once destitute Main Street when they opened this New American bistro and wine bar in a chic spot that wouldn't be out of place in New York City's Flatiron district. Fish is flown in fresh, and if it's available (the menu changes every two weeks), pork lovers shouldn't miss the Three Little Pigs: pork tenderloin stuffed with housemade pork sausage topped with a horseradish-bacon glaze. For dessert, Megan's daily cheesecake special is always divine.

August

$$$$ | Central Business District Fodor's Choice

If the Gilded Age is long past, someone forgot to tell the folks at August, where the main dining room shimmers with masses of chandelier prisms, thick brocade fabrics, and glossy woods. Service is anything but stuffy, however, and the food showcases the chefs' modern techniques. Nothing is mundane on the seasonally changing menu, which might include imperial wagyu with sunchokes and crispy boudin or P&J oysters with paddlefish caviar and Pernod. A truly remarkable vegetarian menu can be prepared upon request. The sommelier is happy to counsel you on the surprisingly affordable wine list.

Aurora

$$ Fodor's Choice
Handmade pastas, exceptional antipasti, and wonderful brunch have earned homey Aurora a loyal following. Most ingredients are locally sourced, though the mozzarella and burrata hail from Italy. Ricotta, black truffles, and prosciutto di Parma elevate the eggs Benedict at brunch, when the French toast comes stuffed with apple compote and topped with Amarena cherries. The trattoria's main dining room is inviting enough, but angle for a seat in the enclosed garden (heated in winter), where lush ivy covers the brick walls.

Aurum

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

Extraordinary flavors flow from ordinary ingredients in the shareable plates at this perfectly situated space at the bottom of Fannie Hill. Root vegetable salad tossed in balsamic dressing, Parker House rolls with a pinch of sea salt, and Korean fried chicken with gochujang hot sauce are best enjoyed with a craft cocktail or glass of wine by a fire pit on the large patio with stunning mountain views. Large windows, cozy couches, and banquettes with high tops invite casual dining in the front, while tables and dimmer lighting offer a more formal experience in the back. The "for the trails" menu offers a sophisticated spin on sack lunches perfect for adventurers on the go.
