California Grill

$$$$ | Magic Kingdom Resort Area Fodor's Choice

The view of the surrounding Disney parks from this 15th-floor restaurant is as stunning as the food, especially after dark, when you can watch the nightly Magic Kingdom fireworks from an outdoor viewing area. The space has stylish mid-century modern furnishings and chandeliers, and the exhibition kitchen is so well equipped that it has a cast-iron flat grill designed specifically for cooking fish. California Grill offers a three-course prix fixe menu, with dishes incorporating locally sourced foods where possible. Sushi and California stone fruit make up much of the appetizer list; entrées such as the Wagyu strip loin and fire-roasted venison are unlike anything you'll find elsewhere at Disney. A large tea selection can add depth to your dessert choice, whether it's a California cheese plate or one of the various tortes. Consider adding the wine pairing for a special night out.   If reservations aren't available, try the Grill's Lounge. The first-come-first-served space offers the same menu and views.

Calle Dao Bryant Park

$$ | Midtown West Fodor's Choice

Few might expect a restaurant this original, well priced, and tasty to be tucked between Bryant Park and Herald Square. But the truth is, Calle Dao is a find in this busy neighborhood. Its colorful decor and creative menus are inspired by Havana's once-thriving Chinatown, so expect a flavorful fusion of Cuban and Chinese dishes such as ropa vieja (shredded beef) noodles, crispy duck baos (steamed buns), and fantastic salads, authentic sides, and delicious stir-fries. Daily happy hours can't be beat (weekdays noon--7 pm; weekends 11 am--7 pm) for both libations and bar bites.

Callie

$$$ | East Village Fodor's Choice

When Callie arrived in San Diego in 2021, it helped begin the transformation of a once-sleepy city known for fish tacos and craft beer into an internationally renowned dining destination. Callie's chef and owner Travis Swikard worked under chef Daniel Boulud for ten years before returning to his hometown, where he now oversees one of the most in-demand restaurants in the region. Mixing contemporary California technique with Mediterranean flavors, the menu soars from impossibly creamy roasted garlic hummus to their famous uni toast, crispy patatas bravas, pappardelle with duck and kurobuta sausage ragù, and mains like mouthwatering Aleppo chicken and Mediterranean octopus. All the plates come in small portions meant for sharing, so order several per person.  Street parking is extremely limited, so save yourself time and stress by using the parking garage on 11th Avenue between J Street and Island Avenue. Validation at the restaurant provides three hours free---plenty of time for dinner, drinks, and dessert.

Camper

$$$ Fodor's Choice

If there’s such a genre as refined camping fare, then that is what chef Greg Kuzia-Carmel offers guests at his warm, bustling restaurant. Local fish, meats, and produce are highlighted, with dishes that beautifully blend pastoral with contemporary. Pastas are a particular strength, as are cocktails from the fun bar. It’s a big city–feeling restaurant where it’s possible to have an ambitious meal of Baja kampachi crudo then English pea agnolotti, but it’s also a relaxed spot for a casual date night or to come solo for a quick cheeseburger (with an incredible “secret sauce”).

Campfire Grill

$$$ Fodor's Choice

Located within Garden City's distinctive Conestoga Ranch glamping resort, this rambling and scenic seasonal restaurant (housed in a tent with a firepit overlooking the property's covered wagons) is the most distinctive dining destination in town, and one of the most upscale too. Campo

$$$$ | Los Ranchos de Albuquerque Fodor's Choice

With pink light rising on the Sandias and lavender fields aglow, dining at Los Poblanos—its menu wholly committed to finely prepared dishes made from organic and locally sourced ingredients—can be a transcendent experience thanks to the pastoral setting of Albuquerque’s historic North Valley. The seasonal menu is a tantalizing mix of distinctive farm-to-table flavors crossed with Southwestern cooking traditions that together have been become the basis for Rio Grande Valley cuisine. Start with tangy sweet potato pierogi, then move on to a superb field or lemon za'atar salad, then the braised lamb birria, beet risotto, or a special tamale adovada. Or try one of the house-made pastas (carrot cavatelli is a favorite, and, as with most dishes here, they will always accommodate non-meat-eaters with a wholly satisfying variation). Wine, spirits, and microbrew selections, local and regional, are well-chosen. Campo ("field" in Spanish) diners enter its high-ceilinged open space—brilliantly transformed from a one-time dairy barn building—through the charmingly tiled and whimsically lit Bar Campo; dining outdoors is a treat as well since the weather here cooperates just about year-round. Find a somewhat smaller menu at the bar, or come for a memorable breakfast or brunch throughout the week.

The Cardinal

$$ Fodor's Choice

A log cabin interior packed with curios (and classic Pac-Man on the back porch) sets a friendly tone that's matched by the good-humored service.

Carmen's Gelato

$ Fodor's Choice

There's often a line out the door of this artisan gelateria on Homer Spit that's operated by a passionate chef who studied the art of making this dense, richly flavored ice cream in Calabria, Italy, and has garnered numerous awards. You can choose from around 15 flavors, including some rotating seasonal options, such as wild Alaskan rose with local honey, and maple brown butter pecan with Alaskan sea salt. It's open till late on summer evenings.

Cart-Driver

$$ | RiNo Fodor's Choice

Two repurposed shipping containers sandwiching expansive patio spaces are the unlikely industrial backdrop for some of the best pizza and oysters in Denver. The owners of Cart-Driver have modeled their casual, unpretentious spot after truck stops in Italy—the Autogrills that focus on putting out simple, easily worked menus that focus on high quality—and the result is crusts that hold their crisp all the way to the center of each pie and briny-fresh oysters, satiny mousses of tuna and chicken liver, and an odd but intriguing roster of canned beers. Much of the food from the rather short menu is served on baking sheets and in jelly jars, and the effect is not smarmy but practical, while service is friendly and chaotic in the face of an almost-always packed place. Be prepared to wait, or bring a group of eight to snag reservations—or come very late, because they serve food until midnight every night (a second happy hour runs from 10 pm to midnight). A second location in a more typical building in the LoHi neighborhood is more spacious but serves the same savvy fare.

Caruso's

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

A special-occasion destination and treat for multiple senses, Caruso’s combines exceptional views (perched on the sand at Rosewood Miramar Beach resort), sophisticated design (the ocean-inspired decor is as high-end as Santa Barbara gets), and romantic ambience (soft lighting, soft music) with Michelin-starred, Italian-California coastal cuisine. Options include three- and four-course prix-fixe menus (there’s a vegan one, too) and a chef’s tasting menu, which you can augment with wine pairings for an additional fee. The menu changes constantly, depending on the season and chef’s whims, but choices might include yellowtail crudo with tangerine and pickled kumquats; Santa Barbara sea urchin with tomato confit, yuzu butter, and caviar; hibachi grilled tenderloin with truffle bordelaise sauce; and, for dessert, tiramisu.

Casa Mono

$$ | Gramercy Fodor's Choice

Most of the delectable items on the menu at this Iberian, small-plates, corner restaurant are made for sharing, but of particular note are all things seared à la plancha (on a metal plate), including blistered peppers and garlic-kissed mushrooms. The atmosphere is always bustling but the best seats are those at the Casa Mono counter overlooking the chef's open kitchen. The perennially cramped and crowded space sends patrons to Bar Jamón, the wine-and-ham-bar annex next door, where you can pick at plates of jamón serrano while awaiting the main feature.
