The Steamboat Inn

$$$ | 42705 N. Umpqua Hwy., OR, 97447, USA Fodor's Choice

The world's top fly-fishermen converge at this secluded forest inn, high in the Cascades above the North Umpqua River; others come simply to relax in the reading nooks or on the decks of the riverside guest cabins nestled below soaring fir trees. Lodging choices include riverside cabins, forest bungalows (some sleep up to six), and riverside suites; the bungalows and suites have kitchens. Make reservations well in advance, especially for a stay between July and October, the prime fishing months (guide services are available, as are equipment rentals and sales). The exceptionally good restaurant, which offers occasional winemaker and guest-chef dinners, caters primarily to guests, but also has a limited number of tables available by reservation. It's also open for breakfast and lunch to the general public.

  • Good option if en route to Crater Lake
  • Access to some of the best fishing in the West
  • Perfect spot to relax and recharge

Cons

Suttle Lodge

$$$$ | 13300 U.S. 20, Sisters, OR, 97759, USA Fodor's Choice

If famed director Wes Anderson built a wilderness lodge, it’d probably look something like this whimsically updated lakeside retreat in the Deschutes National Forest, where the vintage-summer-camp vibes come with the finest craft cocktails you’ll find between here and Portland. The understated lodge rooms have an Ace Hotel-inspired decor and come stocked with soaps made with pine gathered from around the lake. Guests can rent stand-up paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, and rowboats in the summer and snowshoes in the winter.

Timberline Lodge

$$ | 27500 E. Timberline Rd., Timberline Lodge, OR, 97028, USA Fodor's Choice

Guest rooms are simple, rustic, and charming (a handful of them lack private baths), but don't expect a cushy experience—the reason for staying here is the location and setting. The approach builds excitement: an unforgettable 6-mile ascent that curves its way up to an elevation of about 6,000 feet on Mt. Hood. Then the Lodge materializes out of the mist, and you momentarily forget about the snowcapped peak high above. No wonder Stanley Kubrick used shots of the exterior for The Shining. Complementing the size and majesty of Mt. Hood, the massive structure was erected using timber and rock from the forest and mountain: in 1936–37 more than 500 people toiled, forging metal for furniture and fixtures, sculpting old telephone poles into beams and banisters, weaving, and sawing. A 22-minute film, shown on the lower level, tells the story. You don't need to be a guest to appreciate Timberline—there are daily tours in summer, and day visitors can wander around on their own. Enjoy the restaurants, snow sports, and hiking paths, or relax by the massive fireplace in the "headhouse."

Pros

  • A thrill to stay on the mountain itself
  • Great proximity to all snow activity
  • Amazing architecture

Cons

  • Rooms are small and the least expensive ones have shared bathrooms
  • Views from rooms are often completely blocked by snow in winter
  • Lots of tourists milling about

The latter—open to nonguests (reservations can be hard to get)—is a four-course prix-fixe meal.

Wildhorse Resort & Casino

$ | 46510 Wildhorse Blvd., Pendleton, OR, 97801, USA Fodor's Choice

Situated on a sweeping mesa 6 miles southeast of downtown Pendleton, this contemporary hotel at Wildhorse Resort (operated by the Umatilla tribe) offers plenty of perks even if you're not a gamer, including spacious, modern rooms, a slew of amenities, and a completely smoke-free environment. Rooms are in two different buildings: the stylish 10-story tower building completed in 2011 as part of a $45-million expansion has spacious and attractive rooms. The older courtyard building's rooms are more economical but small and very dated; the building is slated for replacement with a new 200-room tower in the near future. On-site draws include the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute museum, one of the largest casinos in the state, several restaurants and bars, a concert hall, and an acclaimed 18-hole golf course. A $26-million expansion in 2020 added a "Family FunPlex" with a 24-lane bowling alley, food court, arcade, and drop-off child care center. Plan ahead with a reservation for dinner at the fine dining restaurant Plateau, which features several entrees that include Pendleton whisky, including pepper-crusted New York strip steak and pork chops glazed with the whisky. Don't miss the delicious desserts that change by the season but might include cheesecake, creme brulee, chocolate mousse cake, and housemade ice cream.

Pros

  • Some pet-friendly rooms
  • Five-screen movie theater on-site
  • Many family-friendly features

Cons

  • Casino can be noisy
  • A 15-minute drive from downtown restaurants

The Cabins Creekside at Welches

$$ | 25086 E. Welches Rd., Welches, OR, 97067, USA

Affordability, accessibility to recreational activities, and wonderful hosts make these cabins with knotty-pine vaulted ceilings, log furnishings, and full-size kitchens a great lodging choice in the Mt. Hood area. Comfortable, large studio units accommodate from one to four people; a single studio cabin is for those who need only a microwave and mini-refrigerator. The surrounding woods offer privacy, and the owners have amassed an impressive collection of midcentury and pioneer-era bric-a-brac that they display throughout the property. Patios on each unit face the seasonal creek, and the cabins have lock-storage units large enough to hold bikes, skis, or snowboards.

Pros

  • Friendly owners who can dispense fly-fishing advice
  • Quiet, off-highway location
  • Close to hiking and skiing

Cons

  • No dining within walking distance
  • No cabin-side parking
  • Simple but clean, functional furnishings
