Fodor's Expert Review Devonfield Inn

85 Stockbridge Rd., Lee, MA 01238, USA See on Map Fodor's Choice

Occupying a grand Federal house, the Devonfield sits atop a birch-shaded hillside overlooking 32 acres of rolling meadows. Guest rooms deftly blend Colonial style and modern convenience, while the innkeepers' attention to detail manifests itself in numerous ways, from the chocolates in your room to the rotating menu of homemade breakfasts. Amenities include a grand piano in the sitting room, heated pool, and a tennis court.

Pets are permitted in ground floor rooms for an additional fee. Call in advance to book.

The ten guest rooms, with ornate wallpaper and antique accent pieces, have private modern baths, air conditioning, flat screen TVs, pillow-top mattresses, and luxury linens. Many have wood-burning fireplaces and whirlpool baths.

Turn down service includes locally made chocolates.

Bright and clean bathrooms are modern but retain some period styling like pedestal sinks and lighting fixtures.

Guests are invited to lounge in the spacious living room which boasts a grand piano, library, and fireplace.

Each morning breakfast is served on fine china in the formal dining room. You'll feast on a bountiful buffet of fresh baked goods, fruits, granola, and yogurt followed by a hot entree served tableside.

Need a snack? The guest pantry is stocked with freshly baked cookies, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, popcorn, and fruit. A refrigerator and a microwave are available for use during your stay.

There's no bar, but you can chill a bottle of wine in the pantry refrigerator.

Getting Around

A car is needed to make your way around the small towns and mountains of the Berkshires.

For casually elegant, Chez Nous Bistro (3-minute drive) delivers seasonal, French-inspired cuisine along with a long wine list and house-made desserts worth saving room for. Salmon Run Fish House (2-minute drive) is locally renowned for New England and American classics, including grilled and fried fish, steaks, and fresh lobster rolls.

Alta Restaurant & Wine Bar (10-minute drive) is a go-to for pre-dinner drinks or post-Tanglewood show for wine, small bites, or cocktails. Firefly Gastropub (12-minute drive) is the beer lover's place for beer. Find local craft brews, imports, and a long list on tap. Love whiskey? Take a seat at the small bar at Gateways Inn (10-minute drive) where they stock more than 200 varieties including singe-malt and rare finds. The small lounge area buzzes with jazz on summer nights, too.

This inn manages to provide the intimate coziness of a B&B with the amenities (like tennis courts and an outdoor heated pool) of a larger resort.
