Lowell
Everyone knows that the American Revolution began in Massachusetts. But the Commonwealth, and in particular the Merrimack Valley, also nurtured the Industrial Revolution. Lowell’s first mill opened in 1823; by the 1850s 40 factories employed thousands of workers and produced 2 million yards of cloth every week.
