You might think a place in such a high-tech neighborhood would be all stainless steel and chrome; think again: the Queen Anne–style Kendall Hotel is homey and ultrafriendly, bright-hued and lively—and it's convenient, with a T stop just one block away. Based in the former Engine 7 fire house, it is stuffed with related memorabilia. An antique Chinese checkerboard, a ceramic Dalmatian, and a whimsical grandfather clock contribute to the mishmash decor. When the Marriott chain took over the geek-chic Le Méridien Cambridge-MIT, with its tech-savvy rooms and surroundings, some fans worried the Cambridge spot would lose its charm; but the new owners only amped up the offerings—and added some luxe touches—by displaying cool interactive lobby art from MIT and refurbishing the guest rooms with platform beds, Euro top mattresses, flat-screen TVs, and ergonomically designed furniture. A good alternative to chain-owned, big-box Back Bay hotels, the boutique family-owned Lenox offers top-notch service, in-room wellness and spa therapies, a fitness center with Peloton bikes, and a business center. A T stop is right across the street, making the hotel a good launching pad for exploring the city sans car. Guests appreciate the Lenox's sweet, small touches, like seasonal treats and bottled water at turndown service, and give kudos to the friendly staff. The Mandarin Oriental manages to combine classic New England elegance with the luxurious touches the brand is known for around the world, including top-notch service, amenities galore, and public areas adorned with museum-quality art, while large guest rooms include contemporary Asian design, mini kitchenettes, and oversize bathrooms with soaking tubs and separate walk-in showers—all thanks to a $15 million renovation in 2020. The limestone-and-marble lobby conveniently offers direct access to the Prudential Center and Copley Place. Don't skip a visit to the quartz-crystal steam room at the outstanding spa. Chef Gordon Ramsay (of the TV show Hell's Kitchen fame) also opened Ramsay's Kitchen adjacent to the hotel.

Enter the Moxy to find a delivery truck selfie station, an infectious party vibe, and hanging neon lights that spell "theatre," which means it fits right into its Theater District location. However, to check in, guests must go up to second floor (where you'll also get a complimentary house cocktail), or just use a mobile phone for keyless room entry. All guest rooms are intentionally small and feature one queen-size bed and furniture that can be folded and moved—the trade-off is inexpensive rates for a central location. There is a 24-hour snack station, and lots of social space, including Bar Moxy.  

Standing guard at the corner of fashionable Newbury Street and the Public Garden, the old-school, elegant, former Taj Boston had a top-to-bottom facelift in 2020, with a fresh, contemporary look and amenities that include exclusive Byredo bath products, Frette robes and linens, in-room Nespresso Vertuo espresso maker, and access to the 24/7 fitness center, along with preferred seating at the Street Bar and chic see-and-be-seen rooftop restaurant Contessa.

Located in the heart of Boston's most fashionable shopping street, a homey feel and personalized service are at the soul of this elegant and historic 1882 brownstone. The only boutique hotel on Newbury Street, it features natural pine flooring, blue Victorian furnishings, and prints from the Museum of Fine Arts. Guest rooms have a modern look, with some boasting bay windows and others with decorative fireplaces. Limited on-site parking is available for $30 and requires a reservation. Check out the tiny French bistro, La Voile, downstairs.

The hotel decor is unparalleled and palatial, a nod to its historic cultural surroundings and the city’s Emerald Necklace, with botanical influences throughout the property. Everything about the mid-century American rooms is over the top, from Garnier Thiebault linens to marble bathrooms with rain showers, 24-hour butler service to 4K UHD 65-inch televisions. The well-being sanctuary on the 4th floor features a state-of-the-art fitness center, a sensational 65-foot indoor pool, and the Guerlain Spa. There are several incredible dining options on-site, including La Padrona and the celebrated Amar. Pop into the hotel's speakeasy, Blind Duck, if you can find it (hint: take the staircase in the Sky Lobby to the lavish space behind an unmarked door).

Located near Boston's working fish piers and very close to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, this property caters largely to a business clientele. Overall, its decor feels part nautical part preppy, and most guest rooms have water views. The fitness center features a lap pool.
