Fodor's Expert Review The Oakland House Seaside Resort
435 Herrick Rd., Maine, 04617, USA
The coastal acreage on which the main inn, with its recently renovated rooms, and cottages are set was an original land grant by Great Britain’s King George III in 1767 to John and Hannah Billings, direct ascendants of the current innkeepers, Rick and Robin Littlefield. The property has been a working farm, a quarry, an ice business, and, for the past 130 years, a gracious summer colony boasting old-fashioned Maine hospitality. There are private beaches, access to hiking trails, and on-site kayak rentals.
PROS
- old-fashioned Maine hospitality
- private beaches
- lots of outdoor activity options
CONS
- no on-site restaurant
- might feel too isolated for some
- do-it-yourself housekeeping
