Fodor's Expert Review The Westin New Orleans Canal Place

100 Iberville St., New Orleans, Louisiana 70130, USA See on Map

Cameron Todd

A luxury chain hotel offering up stunning views of the city and Mississippi River, a rooftop pool, and a high-end shopping center and movie theater within the same building.

Standard rooms are a comfortable size (350-450 square feet) with quality beds. All rooms promise fantastic views of the city.

YOU SHOULD KNOW All roomside views are enjoyable, but mentioning the "River" rate when you book guarantees you a Mississippi River-facing window.

Simple, with modern amenities and tub/shower combos.

Views from the two story arched windows of the 11th floor lobby are panoramic and among the best in the city. The lobby has the feel of an elegant old library, and with the hotel bar just off of the main room, it’s a great place to hang out and recharge.

The rooftop pool and lounging area is pretty small, but the location—a quirky astro turf oasis on the soaring hotel roof, surrounded by glass walls—makes it a unique and enjoyable place to hang out.

Gym is complete, offering several cardio machines of each type, a free weights and stretching area, and weight machines. The hotel can also provide custom running maps and routes.

Didn't pack your gym bag? The hotel rents New Balance running gear for a $5 fee.

Off of the 11th floor lobby, River 127 serves casual breakfast (buffet and a la carte options) and lunch, with the floor’s fantastic city views an added plus. The Green Bar serves New Orleans-influenced pub fare for dinner.

Specialties at the Green Bar include their signature cucumber Bloody Mary, a weekend build-your-own Bloody Mary bar, and several tasty variations on the classic mojito. The green walls, large marble bar and marble floors add to a pleasant and sophisticated atmosphere.

Getting Around

The Canal Street Streetcar will drop you right in front of Canal Place, and with several other connecting lines, streetcar travel will be an easy and cheap option from this location.

From either direction of Canal Street, you have your pick of French Quarter and CBD favorites to choose from (and tourist traps to avoid). For gourmet food or a date night, reserve a table at award-winning restaurants like August (5-minute walk), Compere Lapin (10-minute walk) or NOLA (7-minute walk). For solid casual fare try Green Goddess (6-minute walk), or one of the many crepe, sandwich, and po boy stands at the French Market (12-minute walk).

The second floor bar at Tiki Tolteca (3-minute walk) offers delightful tropical cocktails in a fun, tiki bar-kitsch setting. Chart Room (5-minute walk) is a popular local joint excellent for people watching. Downstairs, The Theatres at Canal Place (2-minute walk) sell movie tickets for a slightly elevated price, and in exchange offer luxury comfort seating and seat-side service during your movie, with a fine cocktail and wine menu.

Elegant digs, luxury amenities, and panoramic views that can’t be beat make a stay here truly feel as if you’re soaring above the city.
