41 Best Hotels in Near North and River North, Chicago

Background Illustration for Hotels

With a cluster of accommodations around North Michigan Avenue (the "Magnificent Mile"), the Near North neighborhood is where many new hotels are springing up—or reinventing themselves, thanks to multimillion-dollar makeovers. Prices are at the high end, but there are a few deals to be found if you're willing to forgo a pool or concierge service. Consider the area's proximity to great shopping part of the bargain.

In River North, aside from the concentration of independently owned galleries, it's national chains that lead most of the commerce, including some surprising boutique hotels that may be part of a chain but have nevertheless carved out a personality all their own.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Within Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s last building design, this black, boxy skyscraper spans 52 stories and sits along the Chicago River in River North. As one of only three Langham hotels in the U.S. (others are in Boston, New York City, and Pasadena, California), the lone Midwestern outpost from the Hong Kong luxury brand checks off all the boxes, including lavish spa treatments and dining with a view. It’s also LEED Gold certified, the highest sustainability level awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council.

InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile, Near North and River North

Blessed with the double threat of sumptuous historic architecture and an enviable location on the Mag Mile, it's no shocker that this hotel has been going strong for around a century. There's so much to love, from the contemporary air of the guest rooms to the enormous swimming pool and well-stocked fitness center. The Shriner greeting "Es Salamu Aleikum" ("Peace Be to God") is etched on foyer columns, a reminder that it was once the Medinah Men's Athletic Club. In-house destinations include the popular Michael Jordan's Steakhouse and Casa Chi, a Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian fusion) concept by chef Richard Sandoval.
