Four Seasons Hotel Miami

$$$$ | 1435 Brickell Ave., FL, 33131, USA

A favorite of business travelers visiting Downtown's bustling Brickell Avenue, this plush sanctuary offers a respite from the nine-to-five mayhem—a soothing water wall greets you, the understated rooms impress you, and the seventh-floor, 2-acre-pool terrace relaxes you. Inside, a cavernous lobby houses larger-than-life sculptures commissioned by local and Latin American artists. All guest rooms and suites offer city or bay views and a window seating area to enjoy them. Although the pool oasis overlooks Downtown Miami and Biscayne Bay, it's still easy to forget you're in the middle of the city, especially when strolling through the foot-deep wading pool with 24 palm tree "islands" or napping in one of the suspended hammocks. Gym rats rejoice over the beautiful 50,000-square-foot Equinox sports club, complete with complimentary yoga and exercise classes (in fact 100 classes per week!) and plenty of eye candy. The hotel's indoor-outdoor restaurant, EDGE Steak & Bar, is a local dining and happy-hour hot spot for Miami's power players, movers, and shakers.

Pros

  • Sensational service
  • Window-side daybeds
  • Amazing gym and pool deck

Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village

$$$$ | 2 Dole Dr., Westlake Village, CA, 91362, USA

This sophisticated resort with its wide range of amenities—indoor and outdoor pools, multiple delicious restaurants, art gallery, and a sprawling spa and salon—and whole-life wellness programming is technically one L.A. County valley over from The Valley. But as its where quiet luxury-loving denizens in the know go for self-care staycations through the Center For Health & Wellbeing (or to carb-load on the extremely talented pastry chef's breads and desserts in both the all-day café and California brasserie Coin & Candor), it counts. With ample meeting and event spaces, it's also popular with the conference and team-building crowd, which often takes advantage of included fitness classes, meditation sessions, the teaching kitchen, and hiking excursions in the bucolic Santa Monica Mountains seen out the windows of most well-appointed rooms. (Lower levels stare more directly at the lush landscaping and towering rock waterfall.) Although most of the hotel is aimed at pleasing adults such as live jazz at the speakeasy or in-room G&T stations, children will get a kick out of the game room with ping pong and free arcade games, kids' club, and The Cove, a sun-worshipper's dream sanctuary complete with mammoth pool, several hot tubs, hammocks, a bocce court, daybed- and lounge-covered terraces, and a restaurant serving house-made paletas, Wagyu cheeseburgers, and lobster tacos. Sure, it's far from the Hollywood and downtown sites but you'll be enjoying indulging too much to want to leave.

Pros

  • Giant gym includes yoga and spin studios
  • Even bigger spa and wellness program
  • Multiple restaurants

Cons

  • Overlooks the freeway on one side
  • Far from L.A.'s biggest attractions
  • Too few free weekend fitness classes

Four Seasons Hotel, Los Angeles at Beverly Hills

$$$$ | 300 S. Doheny Dr., Los Angeles, CA, 90048, USA

High hedges and patio gardens make this hotel a secluded retreat that even the hum of traffic can't permeate—one reason it's a favorite of Hollywood's elite, whom you might spot at the pool and espresso bar. For a relaxing meal or a healthy smoothie, you can dine poolside on the tropically landscaped terrace. Massages here are among the best, and the nail salon lures the rich and famous. For high-end modern Italian, dine at Culina, the sleek indoor/outdoor eatery.

The Frederick Hotel

$ | 95 W. Broadway, New York, NY, 10007, USA

Located at a busy TriBeCa intersection close to subways, the boutique Frederick Hotel is an ideal launching pad for exploring downtown neighborhoods. The Frenchmen Hotel

$$$ | 417 Frenchmen St., New Orleans, LA, 70116, USA

A stylish choice for those who want to be near the action (and don't mind hearing it all night), The Frenchmen has comfortable, but spare, rooms, with a rooftop terrace, a pool, and a hot tub. Some rooms have balconies over Frenchmen Street, which can be noisy; alternatively, back rooms away from the street can be requested ahead of time and are somewhat quieter.

Pros

  • Good pool area
  • Tiki bar
  • Quieter rear rooms

Cons

  • Parking is difficult
  • Area can be loud and overwhelming
  • No on-site restaurant

Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort

$$$$ | 1 Tarpon Blvd., Fripp Island, SC, 29920, USA

On the island made famous in Pat Conroy's Prince of Tides, with 3½ miles of broad, white beach and unspoiled scenery, this private resort has long been known as a safe haven where kids are allowed to roam free, go crabbing at low tide, bike the trails, and swim. There are more than 150 individual villas and homes here instead of a hotel, though there is a variety of small efficiencies. It's a good getaway for sporty types who like to kayak and canoe, play golf or tennis, and go fishing out of the marina. Families love the narrated nature cruise and the nature center, not to mention all the activities for teenagers. There's a pavilion with shops and a choice of restaurants, often with live entertainment, from the rollicking Bonito Boathouse to the sophisticated Beach Club.

Pros

  • Fun for all ages
  • The beachfront Sandbar has great frozen drinks and live music
  • Two golf courses: Ocean Creek and Ocean Point

Cons

  • Far from Beaufort
  • Some dated decor
  • Could use another restaurant with contemporary cuisine
