Cambria Downtown-Old Port

$$ | 25 Hancock St., Portland, ME, 04101, USA

The name notwithstanding, this relative newcomer may be a stone's throw from Old Port but is really more a part of the burgeoning eastern waterfront neighborhood. Book one of the rooms overlooking Portland harbor (especially on one of the upper floors), and you'll feel like you're sleeping out at sea. Photographic wallpaper in all rooms nod to Portland's history, while Cambria's restaurant, Alto Terrace Bar + Kitchen, gives everyone a reason to hang out in the adjoining lounge or rooftop patio.

Recommended Fodor's Video

Cambria Hotel

$$ | 6 W. Broadway, Boston, MA, 02127, USA

One of very few lodgings in South Boston outside of the Seaport District, this hotel attracts a younger, trendy traveler with simple but well-appointed guest rooms, contemporary art, and snazzy dining and drinking options on-site, including a seasonal rooftop lounge. Rooms feature neutral tones and quotation wall art (from New England literature, of course) and complimentary Wi-Fi. • Easy walk to the South End, Back Bay, and Seaport District

Cons

  • No pets

Camp Richardson

$ | 1900 Jameson Beach Rd., South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150, USA

An old-fashioned family resort on 120 acres fronting Lake Tahoe, Camp Richardson earns retro cred for its 1920s log cabin–style lodge, its few dozen cabins, and its small inn—all tucked beneath giant pine trees—but wins no style points for its straightforward accommodations with a dearth of amenities. Some cabins (one-week minimum in summer) have fireplaces and full kitchens; a few units sleep eight. The Beachside Inn has more modern amenities and sits right on the lake, but its rooms feel like those in an ordinary motel. The resort is well off the road, and there's tons of space; kids have a blast here. Rates drop significantly in winter, when you can snowshoe and  cross-country ski on the property's trails. The resort has a strict no-pets policy. This older property shows its age; if modern amenities matter, look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Lakeside location
  • Great for families
  • Inexpensive daily and weekly rates

Cons

  • Dated style
  • Lacks modern amenities (and even phones and TVs in some rooms)
  • Some cabins available in summer only

Campbell House

$$ | 74744 Joe Davis Dr., Twentynine Palms, CA, 92277, USA

When this stone mansion was built back in 1925 (by a WW I vet who married into a wealthy family before being sent to the desert as a remedy for mustard-gas exposure), no expense was spared, as evidenced by the 50-foot-long great room's planked-maple floor, the intricate carpentry, and the huge stone fireplaces that warm the house on cold nights. Accommodations include two-bedroom suites in the main house, rooms in the converted barn, and cottages—one of them by the pool and hot tub—sprinkled across 25 secluded acres amid Washingtonia palms. Amenities vary by room but can include private patios, firepits, fireplaces, and kitchenettes.

Pros

  • A/c and heating
  • Access to amenities at sister property, 29 Palms Inn
  • Perfect for family reunions or small-group retreats

Cons

  • Somewhat isolated
  • No elevator in three-story main building
  • Furniture and decor is a mixed bag

Capital Hilton

$$$$ | 1001 16th St. NW, Washington, DC, 20036, USA

The choice of many celebrities and dignitaries since it opened in 1943, the Hilton has modern perks like a health club and spa and is well located for shopping and eating out. Black-and-white photographs of D.C. landmarks enhance the traditional and stylish surroundings. The White House, three Metro stations, National Mall, and many restaurants and shops are all within walking distance.

Pros

  • Nice guest rooms
  • Desirable location
  • Great gym, however, there's a daily fee unless you're a silver, gold, or diamond Hilton Honors member

Cons

  • Expensive valet parking
  • Reports of street noise
  • Fee for Wi-Fi
