The Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel and Spa

$$$$ | 26 N. Royal St., Mobile, AL, 36602, USA

Dating from 1852, the Battle House, which has a traditional, ornate lobby and modern, albeit traditionally styled rooms, has been where the rich and famous stay in Mobile. The lobby's blend of ornate arches; domed skylight; and red, white, and blue furniture signal patriotic elegance. The 10,000-square-foot spa hosts a full salon, eight treatment rooms, and a fire pit in the calming Quiet Room. On-site services include a barber shop–hair salon, shoeshine stand, and valet dry cleaning. Three restaurants (one formal, one casual, one trendy) are on the premises.

Pros

  • Fairly large rooms
  • Cruise parking packages available (though limited)

Cons

  • Expensive breakfast buffet
  • Expensive valet parking the only option
  • Late 4pm check-in

Bay Harbor & Coconut Bay Resort

$ | 97702 Overseas Hwy., FL, 33037, USA

Some 200 feet of waterfront is the main attraction at these side-by-side sister properties that offer a choice between smaller rooms and larger freestanding cottages. Coconut palms whisper in the breeze and gumbo-limbo trees shade the 2½-acre grounds. Nice features abound, like well-placed lounge chairs for gazing out over the water and kayaks and paddleboats (for when you want to get closer). Everybody shows up on the sun deck or the 16-foot dock to watch the sun slip into Davy Jones's locker. The rooms are a bit tight but not without island character. Pale-yellow cottages are simply furnished. Ask for Units 25 and 26, a two-bedroom villa that will give you extra space and a water view.

Pros

  • Temperature-controlled pool
  • Owner Peg's amazing homemade scones
  • Free use of kayaks, paddleboats, and paddleboards

Cons

  • A bit dated
  • Small sea-walled sand beach
  • Bring your own charcoal for the barbecue grills

Bayside Hotel

$$ | 2001 Ocean Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90405, USA

Tucked snugly into a narrow corner lot, the supremely casual Bayside's greatest asset is its prime spot directly across from the beach, within walkable blocks from the Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Pier. Expect no frills but a decent value. Beachy-hued rooms are well maintained and feature tiled floors, powerful showers, and a TV. Some include a private patio or balcony, and there's also a shared lounge area outdoors. Access is via stairs and an exterior walkway. There's a small front office instead of a lobby. Drivers must negotiate a cramped lot and then pay $36 a night for parking. Request a room with unobstructed ocean views and balconies. Book early for summer weekends; the hotel typically sells out then.

Pros

  • Cheaper weeknight stays
  • Beach access and views
  • Some rooms with kitchens and balconies

Cons

  • No lobby and expensive parking
  • Basic bedding
  • Thin walls and street noise

BaySide Inn

$ | 618 Water St., Saugatuck, MI, 49453, USA

At this relaxing bed and breakfast, a lovely patio overlooks the Saugatuck harbor that winds its way to Lake Michigan. Choose a room with a view of the harbor or head out to the year-round, outdoor jetted tub to watch the yachts motor back and forth. Couples lounging by the common-room fireplace and families barbecuing on the charcoal grills set a low-key atmosphere. Bear Mountain Lodge

$$ | 60 Bear Mountain Ranch Rd., Silver City, NM, 88062, USA

Once owned and operated by the Nature Conservancy, this serene 1928 haven was restored in 2010, and reopened to great acclaim in the hands of new owners, Linda Brewer and John Rohovec, who continue to offer luxury accommodations for bird-watchers and nature lovers. You have direct access to 178 acres of Gila National Forest land, where you can spot bird species such as the Gila woodpecker, vermilion flycatcher, and red-faced warbler. Four second-story rooms in the main lodge have views of mountains and forestland. Two downstairs lodge rooms have outdoor access to a covered porch. Four guest rooms are available in Myra's Retreat, a separate building named for the former owner, and a great space for a larger family or group. A two-bedroom guesthouse known as the Wren's Nest has an exposed wood ceiling, and a new-for-2021 Mongolian yurt offers another interesting option. Throughout the lodge, hardwood floors and locally handcrafted furniture—all made from reclaimed wood—add to the rustic elegance. The rooms and grounds now have a contemporary touch as well, with the bright addition of sculptures and wall art from the owners' Blue Dome Gallery with locations onsite and in Silver City, where you'll find the Ursa Minor Suite for overnight stays. Box lunches and dinner are available for additional charge and by arrangement. Cafe Oso Azul, featuring local foods and an irresistible menu (roasted vegetable strata, chile-laden pot roast hash, fresh apple cider, Mexican chocolate-chip cookies, and homemade ice cream), is open to the public for Sat. and Sun. brunch.
